Spanish term

seminar de nivelación

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy entrance requirements
Context: La conveniencia de hacer pruebas de entrada o ***seminarios de nivelación***

My understanding is that this refers to extra classes required by some students to bring them up to the same level as the rest, I simply can't think of the correct translation in English at the moment. Thanks in advance.

Note from asker:
Thanks for your answer, Anita, but this sounds to me like it's for people who might have missed a class or two rather than for people who might not be at the same level as the others at the start of a course, which is my interpretation of the context.

courses to bring students up to grade level

In the education field, one often speaks of the ability of a student as being at, below, or above grade level.

Remedial classes is an acceptable translation, although in this day and age of hypersensitivity to terms which could be perceived as lacking respect toward the client, I would be careful using this term.
Note from asker:
Thanks, but I was hoping for something a bit more concise. I think the general gist is correct though.

bridge courses

This might work. I thought of remedial courses too, but think that might imply that there has been a learning problem or some other difficulty which had to be "remedied". It sounds more negative to me. The gap which exists may be due to any number of circumstances and not necessarily a deficiency on the part of the student.

Currently about a third of all entrants to the graduate school in Physics join without having gone through an M. Sc. course in physics. Most such students have completed a B. Sc., and one or two per year have a B. Tech. degree. Such students often have high levels of skill, but lack some of the background knowledge that the remainder have. The bridge courses are being designed to overcome the consequent practical problems by filling the information gap between the average M. Sc. course in India and the others

Thanks for your help but I think I'll go with "remedial classes" in the end, despite the possible negative connotations.

bridging seminar

Having looked at a few of the seminarios, they don't actually seem to be courses, but rather an event that can last from 1 to 3 or 4 days. Therefore, I suggest using the term seminar and not course or class.

Thanks. They just seem to be a short seminar or two to provide the students with info they may lack.

evaluation seminar

I don't think this is about catching up, more a chance for the institution to find out students' level and place them accordingly
