Spanish term

invasión

Spanish to English Law/Patents Government / Politics Development

Discussion

Lesley Clarke Dec 13, 2007:
I like your suggestion of "organized land squatting initiative"
Yasser El Helw Dec 13, 2007:
Hi Oscar. Your analysis of my "encroachment" is very right. I hadn't taken enough time to read the complete context and I thought it had to do with encroaching on forests!! How about "land theft" or "land grab"?
Victoria Porter-Burns Dec 13, 2007:
Hi Óscar. Please see my note on Yasser's suggestion below. Hope it helps!

squat

This is the definition given in the The American Heritage Dictionary:

3. To settle on unoccupied land without legal claim.
4. To occupy a given piece of public land in order to acquire title to it.

I also works as a noun

Note from asker:
Squatting sound very good. I need to describe the action; so far I have tinkered this together: "organized land squatting initiative".
Peer comment(s):

neutral neilmac : I believe "squatting" is a better noun form here for the action

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I have decided to use a combination of "squat" and "settlement" -> "squatter settlement" I feel I can drop 'organized' and 'initiative' which are already contained in the concept of "settlement". jack_speak I am sorry I can't share the Kpoints. Thanks a lot to everybody else. All your suggestions were very useful. "

occupation

an illegal occupation? isn't this it?
but it also could be an invasion (in the first stage)
Note from asker:
Hi, Allegro. I don't want to use the term "illegal". I don't know, I need something like "informal"...
Peer comment(s):

thanks
agree Joss Heywood : I prefer this. "Occupation" and "occupy" are frequently used with the idea of "moving into" as well as "inhabiting", whereas "squat" has more connotations of "being in"

Note from asker:
Right. These "Invasiones" often take place in a single day. They are highly organized. The settlers even sometimes take papaya seedlings with them for future proof of continued ownership. My understanding of encroachment is something gradual and starting from your own property, not just somewhere else.
Peer comment(s):

agree neilmac : I like this option

Thank you Neil :-)
agree Victoria Porter-Burns : depending on the manner in which the occupied land is 'invaded' - 'encroachment' to me says that it's happening slowly but surely, where as an 'invasion' would be more sudden/forceful

expropriation

Expropriation is the act of taking possession of an item of property from its owner in exchange for little or no compensation and irrespective of the wishes of the original owner. The term is used to both refer to acts by a government or by any group of people.

settlement

I think this is reallt the word most used to describe what is going on here, much like Israeli settlements in the West Bank, for example, maybe government sanctioned, maybe not; maybe sudden; maybe informal; might be public or private land - in Colombia it could be on some rancher's property.

For a single phrase that describes the action:

Organized settlement in undeveloped land

Just another suggestion - good luck!
