French term

méchage

French to English Medical Medical (general) hospitalization summary
Hopefully the last question of the day!

In describing the surgery to repair the fractures of the tibial shaft and lateral malleolus...

Can someone tell me what this process of "méchage" is in English? (I'm still searching, but running a little low on time...

Thanks!

Discussion

Denise Pavao (asker) Oct 30, 2016:
The reason I leaned toward hole drilling was the fact that gauze draining (I think packing was incorrect here since the wound was closed with stitches and post-op care to patient was to just keep the wound clean) is described as a last step in surgery, whereas this "méchage" happened just after placing the plate and before screwing in the screws.

I'm wondering if there are two different concepts here - it sounds like wound packing if for a deep wound that remains open to allow for healing. My patient received stitches and was sent home with instructions to keep the wound clean. So I'm wondering if the "méchage" was just to handle drainage prior to closing the wounds. So I wonder if that is in fact "gauze drain."

drilling of holes

The other possibility in this context is that "méchage" refers to drilling of holes in the bone, since "mèche" can also be translated as drill bit.

In this case the surgeon may be drilling a hole distally for a screw, pin, nail, etc.

Please also look at the ProZ entry below and the bilingual surgical reference on page 12

Thanks Joanne! This makes more sense for the context. And thanks for the great resource!

(wound) packing

méchage = packing
http://www.granddictionnaire.com/ficheOqlf.aspx?Id_Fiche=844...

http://www.aast.org/discharge-instructions-for-wound-cares
When a wound is deep, or when it tunnels under the skin, packing the wound can help it heal. The packing material absorbs any drainage from the wound, which helps the tissues heal from the inside out. Without the packing, the wound might close at the top, without healing at the deeper areas of the wound.
