I did wonder whether glass back plates for fire places existed. They seem to. See http://www.lagunawaterworks.com/safretti_riviera_le_gl_wall_...

A bevel or sometimes called a “beveled edge” refers to an angled transition on the corner of a fireplace. You can find a beveled edge typically where the horizontal and vertical surface of the fireplace meet.

Contrecœur:
Ce sont les parties de la cheminée qui encadrent le foyer tant sur les côtés qu'au fond de la cheminée. C'est pourquoi la plaque de fonte placée au fond de la cheminée peut être également appelée "contrecœur".

Looking at the rather picture supplied by Althea: https://www.imiweb.org/01-160-010-fireplace-detail/ that labels the side of the firebox as contre-coeur, while https://www.aidaubricolage.com/images/cheminee-a-feu-ouvert.... labels the fireback (see https://www.imiweb.org/01-160-010-fireplace-detail/) as contre-coeur. This is confusing, as http://www.authentic-antiques.com/images/cheminee-ancienne_l... labels the timber bevel of the fire surround as contre-coeur. One certainly couldn't use timber in the other instances!
I now tend to think that the "coeur" is the firebox and a "contre-couer" could be any element at a roughly 45° angle to the back of the firebox. However, one would be unlikely to see a glass fireback, while glass bevels are rather more likely.

: I'm just a little confused as your initial bevel is the edge, but your later citation suggests surfaces (presumably left, right, above and behind the fireplace)

Have a look at the picture on that webpage, which makes it much clearer and compare that with the picture on the French website.// See note I've just added.

In addition to this, from what Robert has referenced regarding newer fireplaces with glass surrounds, this may also be yet another possibility.
Do you have any more context regarding the type of fireplace?
In the Dictionnaire du bâtiment et du génie civile/Dictionary of building and civil engineering, it says "contre-cœur m back-plate or rear wall of a chimney hearth".
It also has the following definitions:
rear wall of a chimney hearth contre-cœur m
wall at the back of a chimney hearth contre-cœur m
back-plate of a chimney hearth contre-cœur m
On page 39 of this product brochure, it says you can buy fireplaces in black glass versions:
