It would appear to be a loan-word from the English 'shim'. Incidently it seems to be much more widely used in Norwegian than in Danish.

: Yes, this is a rather old loan, to boot - I'd guess it 'immigrated' with sailors some 100 years ago...

Yes, I would simply say "shim up the cable..." and "the boom must be shimmed up", or something to that effect.
