الأدق ترجمتها في المضارع ويمكنك استبدالها ب
أفضل أو حبذا ألا تغادر ولكن لا يصح استخدام أي زمن دون المضارع

would rather + past tense = present meaning استخدام الزمن الماضي هنا لا يدل على الوقت في الماضي، وإنما هو تركيب لغوي بحت
ينبغي أن تدل الترجمة على المعنى الحاضر وليس الماضي

if i am right, that's either media or literary.
حبذا is right but yet not widely used,
أفضل is more personal and shows that the speaker prefers that s/he won't leave
