French term or phrase: télémesure et télé comptage
It looks to me as though both these terms would normally be translated as "remote metering" or "telemetry". So I am a bit puzzled to find both of them here. Could someone please enlighten me about the difference between them and how to translate this. The context is the control cabinet interface for a lift alarm system. I should mention that this text seems in part to have been cut and pasted and the writer is not terribly literate in French.

"Les informations à interfacer seront de type téléalarme, télésignalisation et télécommande (tout ou rien) et éventuellement télémesure et télé comptage."

télémesure et télécomptage
remote measuring and remote counting

Explanation:
télémesure = remote measuring = the variable being measured is a continuous variable can take any value (a "floating number" in computing) (between some maximum and minimum) - the reading is a real number and the precision of the reading (the number of significant decimals) is limited only by the sensitivity of the sensor;

télécomptage = remote counting = the variable being measured is a discrete variable that must be expressed in whole numbers (an "integer" in computing) - the reading MUST be a whole number [one car, two cars one pedestrian, two pedestrians etc..]

a bit like "countables" and "uncountables" ...

télécomptage = more accurately counting "in fixed increments" like "counting" the number of "units" of electrical energy consumed.

for example:

télécomptage could be about counting the number of passengers getting in or out of the lift;

télémesure could be about measuring the total weight of all passengers in the lift cabin, or the tension of the lift cable, or the speed of the cabin ...

Asker: Thanks Daryo, that's very helpful. I note though that it is different from Tony's suggestion in the Discussion section.
