Es decir, cómo ese "fenómeno" se puede variar para otros propósitos que no sean los que meramente se vean a primera vista. Pienso que, por algún motivo, el autor ha utilizado la palabra "fenómeno" en castellano y hay que respetarla. Pero, cuando se mira tal fenómeno, y se analiza y se considera cómo se puede variar... puede que se llegue a...... ¿Quién sabe? Pero el fenómeno ya está establecido.

I think this is what is meant, in simpler language!

I believe that 'variar' here should be translated more in the sense of a change rather than a variation. Because the text is referring to the function of diagrams I think 'steps in a process' would work. You could also use 'to show how something will happen' but that might be a little too informal.
