compass and pole star / compass and north star
I think "norte" refers not to the pointer on the compass (that would be pleonastic) but to the heavens which guide travellers at sea and in the Arabian desert

as compass and north
Creo que una traducción literal encaja muy bien en el texto y su significado. Algo que le indique los diferentes caminos posibles (brújula) y además el mejor camino (el norte).
Mi sugerencia.

serve as a compass (to guide/point/lead them "north")
I agree with Caminante that usually "compass" is enough. However, you can include the other reference as well (some people might use the compass to go west instead of north...).

Spanish term (edited):
una teoría que sirva a los profesores como brújula y norte
a theory that guides the efforts of professors
A fairly simple approach that I think captures the idea.
I don't see any need to replicate the redundancy of "brújula y norte" and "compass" seems a bit overblown in the present context, at least to my ear. "North" certainly does not work in English.
Suerte.

(a theory) that will provide an adequate orientation (to professors ...)
Another option. Or "that will provide a means of orientation to professors..." A compass (that apart from the Devil's Triangle and one other place indicates magnetic north) or other means of finding "true north" (that is a metaphor for finding one's way) are all methods of orientation.

Thanks, Gloria. "Adequate" could replaced with "sound", etc.
