The simplest solution would be for Proz.com to require members to fill in a specified amount of information in their profile before being able to contact other members privately by email. For those web-savvy people at Proz, I imagine that wouldn't be too difficult to do.

Instead of just whining about these ridiculously low private job offers (a recurring topic in these forums), I'd be more interested in discussing with Proz.com if there's anything we can actually *do* to solve the p... See more

... well, you can find translation cheaper than your offer for 0.02/word: Google Translate does it for free.

And, like used cars, you get what paid for it.

I didn't say it was foolproof. I was just throwing it out there. Better to offer suggestions, as Tom says, than to sit back and complain or, with respect, to take a defeatist approach and simply say 'supply and demand will have their way'. Supply and demand aren't the only determinants of price, which is why high-end retailers sell the same products for a lot more than their discount counterparts.

I think Robert Forstag hits the nail on the head. It's all about perceptions...

If you can't prevent suppliers from paying pathetic rates, you CAN be seen to be discouraging rather than encouraging it by putting some measures in place.

You can be seen to represent the interests of translators and to uphold the status of translation as a profession rather than something you get for free on Google or on the cheap from a human.

I still think an obligatory 'minimum rate' field when posting jobs or approaching translators (perhaps pegged to a % of the average rate for the language combination, to adapt one of Robert's ideas), is an ok suggestion (I'm sure others can do better). If suppliers ignored bids above their 'real rate', they may find there aren't any bids and get the message that proz isn't a bargain basement for translators...is it?
