Source text - Korean 본 연구에서는 10년 사이 알코올 사용장애에서의 성별 차이가 감소했음을 밝혀내었다. 특히 현재의 젊은 층에서 성별 차이가 크게 감소하였고, 그 결과 20대에서는 남녀 사이의 알코올 사용장애에 대한 위험이 유의하게 차이나지 않음을 보고하였다. 이러한 성별 차이의 감소는 급격한 사회변화에 의한 것으로 생각되며, 이전에 미국에서 이뤄진 연구와, 중국에서 이뤄진 역학조사에서 보고된 결과와 일치한다. 따라서 알코올 사용장애의 역학적 분포, 문화적 요인과의 관련성, 그리고 성별과의 연관성에 대해 가치있는 정보를 제공할 것으로 기대된다.
특히 아직까지 아시아 문화권에서 알코올 사용장애의 성별 차이의 변화에 대한 연구는 없어, 아시아 문화권에서 알코올 사용장애의 성별 차이에 대하여 분석한 첫 논문이다. 또한 아시아 문화권에서의 알코올 사용장애의 변화양상을 연구한 논문도 많지 않다. 따라서 본 논문은, 차후 아시아의 알코올 사용장애 연구 뿐 아니라 아시아 계열의 이민자를 대상으로 하는 연구에, 귀중한 기초 정보를 제공할 수 있을 것이다.
다만, 본 연구 결과를 다른 아시아 국가에 직접적으로 일반화시키는 것에는 주의가 필요하다. 미국과 중국에서 공통적인 경향을 보였던 것으로 보아, 성별 차이가 줄어드는 현상은 산업화의 변화 과정에서 일반적으로 일어나는 현상일 수 있으나, 각 국가의 서구화 정도, 알코올에 대한 태도, 성별역할의 차이 등에 따라 다르게 나타날 가능성도 있다. 각 국가별, 문화별 요인과의 관련성에 대해서 각국에서의 좀더 구체적인 연구가 필요할 것이다.
본 연구의 강점으로는 전국적인 규모의 조사로 충분한 수의 조사대상자를 확보하였다는 것과, 구조화된 진단도구인 CIDI를 사용해 알코올 사용장애 진단의 신뢰성을 높였다는 것이다. CIDI는 진단기준과 관련된 행동을 질문하고 답하게 되어 방어적인 태도를 줄일 수 있을 것으로 기대되며, 엄격한 기준을 만족해야 진단하게 되기 때문에 위양성이 적다. 또한 2001년과 2011년 이루어진 전국 규모의 연구를 단면적으로 비교하였는데, 두 연구는 사용한 진단도구가 동일하고, 조사대상을 선정하는 방식 역시 유사한 방법을 사용하였다. 동일 코호트를 F/U한 연구는 아니지만 조사대상 지역이 비슷하였기에 조사의 모집단도 유사할 것으로 생각된다. 또한 비슷한 연구진의 진행으로 이루어졌기에, 조사 방법의 차이에서 오는 오류를 최소화하여 직접 비교할 수 있다는 강점이 있다. 단면연구에서 제공할 수 있는 가장 강력한 수준의 근거를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
Translation - English This study found supporting evidence for decrease in gender gap in AUD (alcohol use disorder) in the past 10 years. This decrease was especially prominent in the younger population so that between the men and women in their 20’s, there was no significant difference in AUD risk. Such decrease in gender difference is considered to be caused by rapid changes in the society and culture, consistent with the results of epidemiological studies conducted in the US and China. The findings of this study may contribute valuable insight into the cross-national epidemiological distribution of AUD and its relation to socio-cultural factors and gender differences.
Especially, this study is the first report to analyze the gender difference in AUD in Asia when very few studies have examined changes in AUD at all in Asia. This study may provide a foundation for further research endeavor on AUD in Asia and also among Asian immigrants in other parts of the world. Nevertheless, caution would be necessary when generalizing the results of this study to other countries in Asia. Given that the US and China showed similar trends, the phenomenon of shrinking gender gap may be a general side effect of social changes due to industrialization, but its manifestation may be influenced by various factors such as the extent of westernization, public attitude toward alcohol, and different gender roles of each country. Further research in the relevant socio-cultural factors would be necessary for each country.
The strengths of this study include the inclusion of a large pool of respondents on a national scale and the high reliability of AUD diagnosis with the use of a systematic diagnostic tool, the CIDI (Composite International Diagnostic Interview). The CIDI is expected to lower defensiveness in responses as it asks about behaviors pertaining to diagnostic criteria and has a low false-positive rate because of its rigorous diagnostic criteria. The possible error due to differences in methodologies is minimalized as this study is a direct cross-sectional comparison of a nation-wide survey conducted in 2001 and 2011 that used the same diagnostic tool and similar sampling procedures, and similar teams of researchers were involved. While the survey did not follow up on the same cohorts, the populations represented by the respondents are likely to be very similar to each other as they were recruited from similar geographic areas. The resulting evidence would provide the strongest support that is realistically possible from a cross-sectional study.

He had everything he wanted except a wife.
One day the squire saw a young maid working in a hayfield.
He liked her and was sure she would want to marry him.
So he told her that he wanted her to be his wife.
“Thank you, but that’s not to my liking,” she said.
So the Squire told the maid’s father that if he could arrange this marriage he would give the man much gold.
“Yes, you may be sure I’ll bring my daughter to her senses,” said the father.
“She’s only a child, and doesn’t know what’s best for her.”
But all his talking did not help, for his daughter was also very stubborn.
The father decided that to keep his promise he had to trick his daughter.
He would have to have the girl sent to the squire’s farm as though she were needed for some farm work.
When she arrived a wedding would be waiting.
The squire began to prepare for a grand wedding.
He sent one of his farm lads to fetch what he had been promised.
So the lad ran off toward the farmer’s house and found the daughter raking hay.
“I am to fetch what your father has promised the squire,” said the lad.
“So that is what they are up to,” she thought to herself.
“I suppose he wants that little pony of ours,” she said.
With this, the boy jumped on the back of the pony and rode home at full speed.
The boy soon arrived at the squire’s house where the women were waiting to dress the bride for the wedding.
The women fell into laughter when they saw the pony.
They decided the squire wanted to make his guests laugh, so they dressed the pony.
“Very well, bring her in!” said the squire.
“I am ready.”
There was a terrible clatter in the hall.
When the squire’s bride entered everyone laughed.
They say the Squire never went courting again.
Translation - Korean 옛날에 재산이 아주 많은 대지주가 살았다.
그는 부인이 없다는 것 빼고는 자기가 원하는 것은 모두 갖고 있었다.
그는는 하루는 건초밭에서 일하는 젊은 처녀를 보았다.
그는 그녀가 마음에 들었고, 그녀도 자신과 결혼하는 것을 원할 것이라 생각했다.
그래서 그는 그녀에게 자기의 아내가 되기를 원한다고 말했다.
“고맙지만 저는 마음에 안 드는데요” 라고 그녀는 말했다.
그래서 대지주는 처녀의 아버지에게 이 결혼을 성사시키면 금을 많이 주겠다고 말했다.
“예, 딸년이 정신을 차리도록 확실히 하겠습니다,”라고 아버지는 말했다.
“애가 아직 어려서 뭐가 좋은 건지 아직 몰라요.”
하지만 아버지의 말도 소용이 없었으니, 딸의 고집은 매우 강했던 것이다.
아버지는 자신의 약속을 지키기 위해 자신의 딸에게 속임수를 쓰기로 했다.

그래서 일꾼은 망아지의 등에 올라타고 집으로 전속력을 다해 달렸다.
일꾼은 이내 여자들이 신부를 치장하기 위해 기다리고 있는 대지주의 집에 도착했다.
그 여자들은 망아지를 보자마자 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
그들은 대지주가 하객들을 웃겨주려는 생각이라고 짐작하고 망아지를 치장했다.

Source text - English Behaviorism refers to a school of thought in Psychology.
The influence of behaviorism reached its peak in the early to middle parts of the 20th century.
Today fewer Psychologists refer to themselves as behaviorists.
Three important aspects of behaviorism are classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and an emphasis on observable events.
Classical conditioning describes how organisms form associations between stimuli.
It explains why we react to some things with joy, anger, or fear.
Ivan Pavlov was the first to describe classical conditioning.
He performed experiments in which dogs were conditioned to salivate to a bell.
A bell is paired with an unconditioned stimulus, such as meat powder.
Eventually the bell by itself will make the dog salivate.
Operant conditioning describes how rewards and punishment change behavior.
People are likely to repeat behaviors that are reinforced.
B. F. Skinner was a prominent operant conditioning researcher.
He conducted many experiments in which animals were reinforced for doing certain things.
One example is training a pigeon to peck at a disk to obtain food.
Behaviors can also be reduced by punishing them.
A characteristic of all behaviorism is a focus on observable events.
Behaviorists believe that we should only study things that can be directly measured.
For example, researchers can measure how long it takes a rat to run a maze.
This can be determined by how much food you give the rat.
Behaviorists believed that we should not talk about mental events like thoughts.
This view is not widely held today.
Few psychologists today consider themselves behaviorists.
Their methods are still widely used, however.
Classical and operant conditioning, and the focus on observable events remain important aspects of behaviorism.

행동주의의 영향은 20세기의 초기와 중기에 정점에 달했다.
오늘날은 그 때보다는 적은 심리학자들이 스스로를 행동주의자라 여긴다.
