Due to the necessity of comprehension and interaction among nations in a globalized world, foreign language teaching has become indispensable. In this context, the international deals that Brazil has signed have stimulated the interest in the learning of Portuguese, which has potential to reach international relevance. In order to obtain significant results, it is necessary to recognize the strategic importance of this area, since the number of courses offered at Higher Education level is still very limited. Therefore, this paperwork aims at presenting this recent area of study and reflecting about its importance through a brief historical description, as well as the identification and specification of the courses offered by Brazilian Universities. In addition, this paperwork also shows the results obtained so far and put forward suggestions for its improvement.

Em um mundo globalizado, devido à necessidade de compreensão e interação entre nações, o ensino de línguas torna-se imprescindível. Devido aos acordos internacionais que o Brasil tem assinado, o interesse pela Língua Portuguesa tem aumentado consideravelmente. Assim sendo, o ensino de Português para Estrangeiros apresenta possibilidades de alcançar projeção internacional. Para que resultados significativos sejam obtidos, é necessário que se reconheça a importância estratégica dessa área, já que a oferta de cursos dessa especialidade em nível superior ainda é bastante reduzida. O presente trabalho, portanto, objetiva expor essa recente área e refletir sobre a sua importância, através de uma breve descrição do surgimento do Ensino de Português para Estrangeiros, bem como a identificação e caracterização dos cursos oferecidos nas universidades brasileiras. Além disso, serão apontados os progressos obtidos nessa área, propostas, e sugestões para sua melhoria.
