Source text - English Every two seconds, someone somewhere
in the world experiences a stroke.
And one out of every six people will have
one at some point in their lives.
Strokes deprive brain cells of oxygen
and are one of the most
common causes of death
and a leading cause
of preventable disability.
When someone experiences a stroke,
quick medical care is critical,
and can often help avoid
permanent brain damage.
But what causes strokes
in the first place?
And what can doctors do to treat them?
The brain makes up just 2%
of your body’s mass
but consumes more than 20%
of the oxygen in your blood.
That oxygen is carried to the brain
through a system of arteries.
Carotid arteries supply
the front of the brain,
and vertebral arteries supply the back.
These are connected to each other,
and divide into smaller
and smaller vessels
that get billions of neurons
the oxygen they need.
If the blood flow is interrupted,
oxygen delivery stops and brain cells die.
There are two ways this can happen.
Hemorrhagic strokes are when a perforated
vessel allows blood to leak out.
But the more common type
is the ischemic stroke,
when a clot blocks a vessel
and brings blood flow to a halt.
Where do these clots come from?
On rare occasions,
a sudden change in heart rhythm
prevents the upper chambers of the heart
from contracting normally.
This slows down blood flow,
allowing platelets, clotting factors,
and fibrin to stick together.
The clot can be carried up
towards the arteries
and blood vessels supplying the brain
until it gets to one
it can’t squeeze through.
This is called an embolism
and it cuts off the oxygen supply
to all the cells downstream.
The brain doesn't have pain receptors,
so you can't feel the blockage itself.
But oxygen deprivation
slows brain function
and can have sudden, noticeable effects.
For example, if the affected area
is responsible for speech,
an individual’s words may be slurred.
If the stroke affects a part of the brain
that controls muscle movement,
it can cause weakness,
often just on one side of the body.
When this happens, the body
will immediately try to compensate
by diverting blood flow
to the affected area,
but this isn’t a perfect solution.
Eventually, the oxygen-deprived cells
will start to die,
leading to brain damage
that may be severe or permanent.
That’s why it’s important to get
medical care as fast as possible.
The first line of treatment
is an intravenous medication
called Tissue Plasminogen Activator,
which can break up the blood clot
and allow blood to flow again
in the compromised artery.
If it’s delivered within a few hours,
this medication greatly increases
the chance of surviving the stroke
and avoiding permanent consequences.
If Tissue Plasminogen Activator
cannot be given
because the patient
is on certain medications,
has history of major bleeding,
or the clot is particularly large,
doctors can perform a procedure
called an endovascular thrombectomy.
Using a fluorescent dye that illuminates
the blood vessels under a strong x-ray,
the physician inserts a long,
thin, flexible tube called a catheter
into an artery in the leg
and maneuvers
it all the way to the blockage.
A retriever is passed
through this catheter.
It expands and anchors into the clot
when it’s just past it.
The catheter then pulls the clot out
when it’s removed.
These treatments need to be delivered
as soon as possible
to preserve brain function,
which means figuring out fast
if someone is having a stroke.
So how can you tell?
Here are three quick things to try:
1. Ask the person to smile.
A crooked mouth or facial drooping
can indicate muscle weakness.
2. Ask them to raise their arms.
If one drifts downward, that arm weakness
is also a sign of a stroke.
3. Ask them to repeat a
simple word or phrase.
If their speech sounds
slurred or strange,
it could mean that the language area
of their brain is oxygen-deprived.
This is sometimes called the FAST test,
and the T stands for time.
If you see any of those signs,
call emergency services right away.
Lives may depend on it.

Redshift is a high-performance production-quality renderer that supports biased rendering techniques for incredibly fast noise-free renders.
With Redshift, you can get the rendering performance of a small render farm from your existing workstation, saving you time and money, and unleashing your creative potential.
This guide provides information on setting up and using Redshift.
In addition to documenting the various features and settings of Redshift, this guide provides important tips to help you get the most out of Redshift – including helping you choose the most appropriate global illumination techniques to use for a given scene and how to troubleshoot problems like splotches or flickering during animations.
To navigate this guide, simply pick a topic from the Table of Contents on the left. You can also search for a specific keyword using the search box located in the top-right corner of every page.

Installing Redshift on Windows
Important
Before installing or attempting to run Redshift on any 3d app, please ensure that you have a recent (or the latest) NVidia driver installed!
You can download suitable drivers for your GPU through the following link: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
On Windows, you only need the NVidia display driver. I.e. you do not need to install any separate CUDA drivers/packages!
Running The Installer
The Redshift installer will guide you through the installation process.
When you run the installer, you will be greeted with a welcome message as shown below.
As noted on the welcome screen, you should close any running instances of Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Softimage, Maxon Cinema 4D, SideFX Houdini and The Foundry Katana before continuing with the installation. The installation may fail if these applications are running.
Click Next to proceed to the License Agreement screen.
Please review the Redshift Software License Agreement carefully before continuing. By clicking I Agree, you are agreeing to be bound by the terms of the agreement. If you agree with the terms and wish to proceed with the installation, click I Agree. If you do not agree with the terms, you must not click I Agree and you must exit the installer (by clicking Cancel) and remove the installer from your system.
What is a DCC?
DCC stands for Digital Content Creation. We use this term to refer to the various host applications that are supported by Redshift.
After you agree to the licensing terms, the installer will show the Select target DCC applications page. This page allows you to select which DCC applications and versions to automatically setup the Redshift plugins. The installer currently supports automatic setup of the Redshift plugins for Maya, 3ds Max and Softimage. By default, the installer will select all detected compatible versions of Maya, 3ds Max, Softimage and Cinema 4D. You can deselect an entry in the list if you do not want to setup the Redshift plugin for that particular DCC product and version.
The Houdini and Katana plugins require an additional step after running the installer. This additional step is only required the first time you install Redshift and is not required when updating to a new version. For more information, see the links below.

Regardless of what you select on Select target DCC applications page, all Redshift DCC application plugins will be copied to your system, allowing you to later setup Redshift for a particular product and version even if you did not choose to automatically setup the plugin. See the DCC-specific Plugin Configuration sections for more details.
Click Next to proceed to the Node-locked License Warning page. This page explains some important information about node-locked licenses.
Type the word yes in the in the box as instructed and click Install to proceed with the installation. The Redshift installer will copy the necessary files to your system and setup the Redshift plugins for the selected DCC applications.
Once all files have been copied and the Redshift plugins have been setup for the DCC applications you selected, the installer may prompt you to modify your TDR delay settings. If you do not see this screen, it means your system's TDR delay is already suitable for Redshift, or your system does not support TDR.
If you do see the TDR Settings screen, we highly recommend you accept the default presented by the installer. Any changes made by the installer will be reverted when you uninstall Redshift.
Modifying your system's TDR delay settings involves making changes to your system's registry.
After you've decided on your TDR delay settings, click Next to continue.
The Redshift installation is now complete. If this is your first time installing Redshift and you need to activate a node-locked license that you have purchased, you can check Run the Redshift Licensing Tool now to exit the installer and immediately launch the licensing tool. If you have already activated your license during a previous installation, or are using floating licenses, there is no need to run the licensing tool.
Click Finish to exit the installer.
