Im Vergleich mit anderen – heterotrophen - Mikroorganismen, werden die photosynthetisch aktiven Mikroalgen biotechnologisch kaum genutzt. Dies ist im wesentlichen darin begründet, dass phototrophes Wachstum von Mikroorganismen im technischen Maßstab schwierig zu realisieren ist. Hier spielen eine optimale Lichtversorgung und vergleichsweise niedrige Zelldichten- die herausragende Rolle. Zudem wachsen phototrophe nur im Licht, das natürlicherweise nur einige stunden pro Tag verfügbar ist. Algen der Gattungen Spirulina, Dunaliella und Chlorella erreichen unter optimierten „photoautotrophen“ Bedingungen in offenen „Ponds“ bestenfalls Zelldichten von 0.5 bis 10 g/l Trockenmasse und erzielen dabei Produktivitaten von 0.2-4.3 g/l Tag. Dies ist im Vergleich zu technisch genutzten heterotrophen Mikrorganismen, die üblicherweise Zelldichten von über 100 g/l Trockenmasse erzielen, ein sehr geringer Wert.
Nur einige Mikroalgen wurden bisher unter heterotrophen Bedingungen angezüchtet. Derzeit werden u.a. Chlorella, Nitscheria und Chryptecodium auf diese Weise kommerziell kultiviert mit Zelldichten von bis zu 50g Trockenmasse pro Liter. Anwendung finden diese Kulturen im asiatischen Raum im Bereich functional food und Gewinnung ungesättigter Fettsäuren. Einen technologischen Durchbruch brachte vor kurzem der Einsatz von fed-batch Verfahren, mittels derer Galdieria-Kulturen mit bis zu 120 g Trockenmase pro Liter gewonnen werden konnte (Schmidt et al, Biotech Bioeng 90, 77f.; 2005). Dabei wurde, bezogen auf Substrat Glukose eine Ausbeute Yx=0.5 erzielt, die Zellmasse verdoppelte sich ca. alle 6 Stunden.

In contrast to other – heterotrophic – micro organisms, photosynthetically active micro algae have been relatively shunned from use in biotechnology. This is to a large extent because growth of phototrophs from micro organisms is difficult to realise on an industrial scale. Here, it is both an optimal light source and a comparatively low cell density which play incisive roles. Also, phototrophs only grow in light which is naturally available for a few hours per day. Algae of the genera Spirulina, Dunaliella and Chlorella create dry mass under optimum autotrophic conditions in open ponds with cell densities of 0.5 to 10 g/l, and can then reach productivity of 0.2–4.3 g/l per day. In comparison with industrially employed heterotrophic micro organisms that usually produce dry mass of over 100 g/l this is a negligible amount.
So far, only a few micro algae have been grown under heterotrophic conditions. Up until now, Chlorella, Nitscheria und Chryptecodium and a few others have been commercially cultivated in this way, with cell densities of up to 50 g of dry mass per litre. These cultures typically find application in Asia, in the field of functional food and in the production of unsaturated fatty acids. A technological breakthrough recently enabled the introduction of fed-batch processes, with which a Galdieria culture was able to reach a dry mass of up to 120 g per litre (Schmidt et al, Biotech Bioeng p 90, 77; 2005). Then, with substrate glucose, a yield of Yx=0.5 was made; the cell mass doubled every six hours.
