We love powwows and trainings! It's a pleasure meeting many translators we only know from pictures and forums. It helps you realize you're not alone with the many issues of this (not anymore) lonely profession.
We even have a lot of colleagues as contacts in our instant messaging programs, so we can chat, consult and have fun with them anytime. And of course, we help each other during those times when 'all' your customers call at once! ... See more We love powwows and trainings! I'm not about to go into a lengthy definition, but really what I feel with the communication I have with other Prozians (limited to comments below questions, and the occasional direct e-mail) is that I've got some good supportive like-minded buddies out there, whom I would love to meet, at a pow-wow if I ever get the chance, for instance.

I understood the word friend in a very broad way and answered more than 4.
I would imagine that there are as many definitions of what a friend is as there are people in the world. Everyone’s going to have their own point of view on the subject. For me, participating in Proz.com is like dealing with people in the “real” world in the sense that you find you have certain affinities with some people and are attracted to them. I would imagine that there are as many definitions of what a friend is as there are people in the world. Everyone’s going to have their own point of view on the subject. For me, participating in Proz.com is like dealing with people in the “real” world in the sense that you find you have certain affinities with some people and are attracted to them. In my case, it means that I pay more attention and relate more to certain individual’s Quick Poll comments, forum posts, or Kudoz answers. It’s sort of a matter of having similar ideas, outlooks on life or that elusive quality called “chemistry”. It’s the same as in everyday life: you like some people, you’re neutral towards others and some make your hair stand on end and you wish they’d just disappear. After reading several posts or comments by the same person in whatever area of Proz.com, you know something about their background, their hobbies, pet peeves and who they like and (maybe) don’t like at Proz.com. It’s sort of like office politics without the office
The people I relate to here aren’t necessarily people who work in my language combinations. I wouldn’t dream of limiting my relationships in the non-cyber world to just those I work with; I’m more eclectic than that. In fact, one of the things I like about the Quick Polls is that they’re not limited to any “Works in this field” or “Specialises in…” The polls are sort of the melting pot of Proz.com.
I agree with Aceavila-Noni; if I had the chance there are several people who I’d love to meet in person. After all, the ice has already been broken. ▲ Collapse

I think polls are an excellent way of "meeting" people and getting to know each other beyond words. In my case, answering polls is an excellent way of trying not to become a "hermitage" only focussed on my job with less human contact in the real world.

Actually, I have met quite a few people through Proz. Those I have met personally number in the dozens, not to mention others who remain virtual but I would count them among my friends with the hope of also meeting them personally some day.
And I cannot forget still other colleagues I already knew before they joined Proz, but our friendship has become further strengthened here.
That's a far cry from the days when I had to work and develop in isolation.

I worked and developed in isolation, too. Now I tell my students about Proz. It can't possibly mean as much to those who grew up in the Internet world, though.
I have face-to-face friends through Proz (met them at powwows, see each other in person), email friends (usually begun through email continuation of a forum or KudoZ conversation), and even a Facebook friend! (Hi, mew!) Friendships are so much easier to form when you start out with so much in common.

My feelings exactly, which is why I voted "other" - I found out about proz through a friend and colleague and we often collaborate on projects, but I've yet to get to know anyone that I'd really consider a "friend". I've been to one pow-wow and it was great getting to know people in the area, but I've made no real friendships that way so far...

From one friend to another: you mean "hermit" -> the hermitage is the place where they hang out, although both are "hermitaño" en Castellano. Sorry for being so pedantic

Plus one I knew away from Proz.com. Later I knew She's a Prozian.
I met personally only one. I knew her through Proz, then IMing and chating, and I knew that we live in the same city, even we are alumni of same school but different grad. year, and finally we have taken a translation course together. Like Andrés & Leticia do with prozians, we consult and help each other.
Looking forward to networking with serious and persevering translators like her.

Sometimes when I post a question I know that a particular person will give me the answer I am looking for.

Many more than four friends, certainly. They come from Catalonia, Colombia, Euskadi, Venezuela, Spain, Argentina, Italy, USA, Ecuador, et al.

In sites like this, you tend to realize quickly who uses your same register, etc, etc, and I've found nice colleagues and met some professionally though I havent been able to attend any meetings yet.
That's been the best side so far, I can't complain, there are lots of chances of meeting people with the same interests and have fun.:lol:

My interpretation was "people with whom I'm in fairly regular contact whom I met through Proz", and there are essentially 3 of them. I met them all at a conference.
I've also met many others, both at the conference and at a pow wow.

The secret: Powwows, training and conferences.
I made virtual friends first, then met them in Powwows and now they are real friends.
