Mistakes Oct 5, 2020

I worked in house in a number of settings (law offices or health care agencies) and I found most translators were bound to have errors which they didn't even recognize.

If their supervisor corrects their errors, they would feel fine but if their supervisor assigns a peer to edit their work, they would turn into a roar, even though that peer is in fact way better in his translation ability.

That's human nature.

This is just my experiences.

I tend to rush myself when writing up a post. I once thought about hiring a proofreader native in English to go over my messages before I posted them but later on I came to the conclusion that it was not really necessary to do so. I guess this forum is not somewhere to compete for "grammatical superiority" anway.

jyuan_us doesn't claim to be a native speaker of English, and this is a discussion forum, not a grammar or spelling test.

But he advertises himself as a translator into English----

It doesn't matter in the least. We can understand what he writes, and that is all that matters. I personally never correct anyone's writing EDIT: /in forums/ unless the mistake can affect meaning. Jyuan is probably not looking for clients here, and even if he were, I'd say that's his business not mine since he's not asking us to correct his English.

We all know you have an eye for detail, Tom. So, you can, like, eaze up on the corrections.

If we all nitpick each other's spelling we'll frighten off all sorts of people, especially those whose native language is not English. I'd much rather have people of all nationalities joining in, we get more diverse perspectives that way.

No, you were right first time. See, Tom, sometimes you do more harm than good!

Now I've spat coffee all over my keyboard. And I'd only just cleaned it up after Lincoln's comment about Brazil on the other thread.

My clients just came to me requesting my service of translating into English, including several government contractors. I worked for a year as a staff member on a full time, permanent basis translating into English only. I was assigned to translate around 2000 words into English every day.

You may be surprised, Tom in London: this particular employer NEVER asked me to translate a single word into my native language. Is there anything wrong with that?

By the way, I passed their Chinese into English translation tests with high scores before they put me on board or started sending me jobs.

I think these people, I mean my clients and former employers, have a better judgement.

Reading your post, I couldn't help thinking of advertising myself more for translating into my second language.
