Czech term

charakter

Czech to English Other Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs Birth certificate
In an extract from a births register from 1842 it says in the column for the father
Jméno a příjmení, stav a **charakter** neb řemeslo a rod jeho.
Any ideas please?

Hannah Geiger (X) Sep 29, 2021:
First of all, Jiři appears to be correct most of the time. May I just say, though, that stav, IMO, may be referring to a profession and nature thereof. Nature thereof standing for the charakter, IMO
By the way, I am sure you know that in Czech the difference between and and or can be significant.

profession

Great question, haven’t come across this before. Definition: “titul a úřední hodnost, stav, zaměstnání.” Examples: “Propůjčiti charakter vyšší hodnostní třídy. Co si tedy p. otec pomyslí, když nedáš jeho panu synovi patřičného karakteru? (Kosm.) Malá cedulka se jménem i charakterem ukázala mu dvéře, do kterých vstoupil. (Svob.)” (All this PSJČ)

stav a charakter neb řemeslo
= ?
occupation and profession or trade

Not sure about the fine nuance. Curious what solution you will choose, Charles.
Peer comment(s):

agree Pavel Bakič : "Character" can also have a similar sense in English, but the examples on Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/character, sense 12) seem to suggest that it only works in phrases where the position/office is explicitly stated.

character

In my CZ to EN dictionary, along with definition as "distinctive qualities peculiar to a person or thing"; in a person, the term usually refers to qualities of morality and integrity.

In a reply to "note to answerer": I do not find it that odd. In my opinion, back then, (moral) character evaluation was commonly required and provided as part of evaluation of, for example, journeymen learning their trade with a master...
Note from asker:
Thanks Jiri. Just seems a bit of a weird thing to have in a column of a births register, next to stav and remeslo, even for the 1840s...
