Catalan term or phrase: gelats comestibles
This appears in a list of goods for trademark registration. There is no context, except that it is in the same class as coffee, tea, spices, flour, pastry, etc. I know that "gelat" is usually ice cream, but it seems odd to add "comestible."

English translation:edible ice creams
Explanation:
To my surprise, there is such thing as an "edible ice cream" ... maybe they're making a difference with lickable ice creams!!! Link 1 shows a page listing this (including edible ice creams AND ice creams):
"THEY'RE OUT
OF THIS WORLD
CARVEL FLYING SAUCER"
(and design)
[edible ice cream
cones, wafers, waffles,
crackers, cookies, ice
creams, custards and
sandwiches made from
layers of wafers, waffles,
crackers and cookies with
interlayers of ice creams
and custards]" Link 2 (on freezing machines) shows this: "Edible Ice cream can be produced so long as you freeze and expand the materials of ice cream (fresh milk, cream, egg, stabilizer, fragrance and etc. materials)...". It looks as ice creams can be edible or just ice creams... If you do a googling search for edible + ice cream you'll find plenty more instances. Good luck :-)

The difference may be related to the manufacturing process, an ice cream is not edible until they add all the nasty stuff....
TITLE IX
ICE-CREAMS AND THEIR MIXTURES Article 243.- Edible ice-creams are the products obtained by an emulsion of fat and proteins, with the addition of other ingredients or, of a mixture of water, sugars and other ingredients that have been frozen and maintained in that state.

Does this make now a little more sense?? :-)

Thanks - but be careful. In your first example the edible refers to the cones, not the ice cream. This is true of the majority of the Google hits.

Hi Jeanne,

Just an educated guess, but I assume <gelats> is equivalent to <congelados> in Spanish....

disagree  Flavio Ferri-Benedetti: Nope :( That would be "congelats". I really think it's just "ice creams", but as the links below confirm, it is their "legal" name. How odd though!!

ice creams

Explanation:
Indeed it is odd, Jeanne... "gelats" is clearly "ice creams" in Catalan. As a noun, there is no "gelat" which is "no comestible" in Catalan.

Of course you have "gelat" as an adjective, meaning "frozen", but it does not count, in my opinion...

I am clueless!

Explanation:
No es una traduccion muy buena, pero "comestible" es realmente curioso, ya que se sabe que el gelats es menjen.
