Please note that a "drop center well" is quite different from a wheel arch, as supposed by some peers. And that a deteriorated well may damage the tire.

Note: We do not know the reason for the flat tire, but this is one possibility. An arch will not deteriorate any part of the tire (tread, belt, shoulder, carcass, tube (if used), bead, rim or well).

I found the article, where a man changed the rear tire while a young woman stands watching him. It does not state any reason for the flat.

En effet, vu comme ça, oui. Dans un premier temps, je croyais qu'il constatait la crevaison devant le pneu ("Just a flat,"). Il serait donc "devant l'espace normalement occupé par la roue" Mais alors comment expliquer "using a lug wrench"?

If the ST says "rear tire well" and not simply "rear tire" it's for a good reason.

This character has already removed this defective rear tire that is somewhere on the ground or put away inside the vehicle, to be replaced by the spare tire. So this character must be standing next an empty "rear tire well".

Oui, "passage de roue arrière", mais dans la mesure où ils s'agit d'un roman, c'est peut-être un peu trop développé/technique. Une traduction pourrait être :
"Juste une crevaison", dit l'homme accroupit devant le pneu arrière, une croix à la main. "Ce ne sera bientôt plus que de l'histoire ancienne."
