temps commun Explanation: "Common time" is an English, esp. American, term for the 4/4 tempo used in almost all rock songs. I have seen it referred to occasionally in French texts as "temps commun," but they're just translating back from the English -- in other words French didn't come up with a nickname for the 4/4 tempo itself; they're just borrowing the American nickname.
