Dalam perusahaan yg melakukan penggajian dg sistem 'pay-banding' (penggolongan gaji), karyawan tidak mesti naik jabatan dulu untuk mendapatkan gaji yg lebih besar.

Contoh sederhana:

Di suatu sekolah yg memberlakukan 'pay banding', seorang guru bisa mendapatkan kenaikan gaji jika prestasi kerjanya bagus dan mendapatkan kenaikan golongan, misalnya dari golongan 1 ke golongan 2.

Di sekolah ini, untuk memperoleh gaji yg lebih besar, seorang guru tidak mesti harus mendapatkan jabatan wakil kepala sekolah, kepala sekolah, atau jabatan non-guru lainnya.

Gaji yg lebih besar dapat dicapainya hanya dg peningkatan golongan gajinya.
