English term or phrase: ratio
In the ancient Greek, "logos", often translated as "word" or "number", originally meant "ratio". Pythagoreans came up with the theory of ratio and proportion which referred to numbers. Early translators rendered it into Latin as "ratio" which meant "mind" (thus the word "rational"). Medieval writers used the word "proportio" ("proportion") to indicate ratio and proportionalities ("proportionality") for the equality of ratios. It is innate to human beings to create and use ratios, that is being rational.
