отличать (проводить различие между) способных и прилежных учеников от хулиганов и учеников с ограниченными интеллектуальными способностями

Я считаю, что тут нужен перевод двумя словами, потому что идет противопоставление некоторой категории учеников (1) с хулиганами (2) и, скажем корректно, не очень способными (3).
Если оставить только прилежных, то противопоставление не работает полностью, т.к. ученики с ограниченными интеллектуальными способностями тоже могут быть прилежными.
Если оставить только способных, то ситуация аналогичная: хулиган тоже может быть способным.
А вот "способные и прилежные" сразу отсекают и вторых, и третьих.
