Mortality arising from HBV infection is significant.
It is estimated that HBV is
responsible for 0.5–1.2 million deaths each year, with most fatalities being caused by cirrhosis and primary hepatocellular carcinoma.
Few successful treatments for HBV infection have been developed, and vaccination is currently the most effective means by which the disease caused by HBV can be controlled.
The WHO supports the introduction of hepatitis B vaccination into the childhood immunisation programmes of all countries.
As shown in Schwarz et al, vaccination with GSK DTPa-HBV-IPV/ Hib in infancy induces sustained seroprotection and immune memory against HBV, as there is a strong
anamnestic response to the *HBV challenge* in 14 to15-year-old adolescents (Schwarz, 2018).
Although the under-reporting inherent to any spontaneous reporting setting is a limitation of this integrated assessment, it is concluded, at population level, that (potentially) severe infectious diseases are prevented by the use of Infanrix hexa compared to the relatively low risk of side effects
