Al igual que en mi consulta anterior, uno de los temas que enseñan en un curso online de intermediación financiera. Español para uso general (ES / LA).

Entiendo que se refiere a vender una acción esperando que el precio baje, pero apreciaría una explicación y, si es posible, una traducción en la menor cantidad posible de palabras.

No estoy muy segura, pero según lo que explicas creo que se refiere a venta en corto. Es una operación especulativa donde los operadores venden títulos que pidieron prestados o que aún no poseen con la esperanza de volver a comprarlos a un menor precio.
