activité de port - à terre harbo(u)r activity - done onshore Explanation: I - as an ex-Royal Navy sea cadet at Portsmouth Naval Barracks (pls. note again, Pompey readers) and two-times export clerk during my student days - wonder if the question has been properly formulated and parsed. (boat) storage ashore, dry storage, dry stack facility Explanation: Although "dry dock" can be used, see m ref post, it is more common to use a form of words such as "boat storage ashore". You might just ignore the brackets and go straight into that descriptive form of words, using a combination of the above. 1 hr peer agreement (net): +1 |
Reference: port à terre ; port à sec Reference information: These two terms are close cousins, often used synonymously. The former being used for larger boats, generally on cradles, the latter for small craft on racks. Here's an example of the one I know like the back of my hand. Both are regularly translated into English as "dry dock". http://www.nolimitmarine.fr/services/port-a-sec/nos-activite... Note that in other contexts, "dry dock/dry docking" can also be on this scale, where an actual dock/bassin is filled to bring the ship in and then the water drained out, levaing the vessel dry, resting on blocks. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2019-08-03 15:50:49 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Instead of "this scale" read "another scale altogether" and Google or YouTube search to see what I'm getting at. |
