German term
die den Zertifikaten untergeschalteten Noten

Investment / Securities
The question is about "untergeschaltete Noten." The broader context is investment securities and their ownership. - Of course, I know what an investment certificate is, but I'm unsure about the "Noten" and what "untergeschaltet" may mean here. Derivatives?

I tend to believe that we're talking about subordinate(d) notes here ("untergeschaltet" could be the same as "nachrangig"). That said, I am by no means sure because there is - still - so little context. For instance, we know (almost) nothing about the structure of the underlying transaction and the parties involved in it.

Phil's "underlying" mentioned in the discussion could also be possible. As it stands, answering this question is really only a shot in the dark given the lack of background information.

Note from asker:
I think subordinated is more plausible than underlying, but I'm just not sure. So I'm afraid I can't really select this as the best answer. |

: I agree with Phil's ' underlying'; "subordinated" doesn't sound quite right.

We can't really tell without further context.

That's actually different to your question header - it doesn't say "die den Zertifikaten untergeschalteten Noten".
Could "untergeschaltet" mean subsidiary or lower-ranking? Or underlying, maybe?
The Schreiben referenced says that the person who writes the above owes the addressee some money. That's really all there is.
