I understand segmento tipico as referring to type of crime but the exact meaning eludes me and I'm not sure how to word the phrase.

Any help would be appreciated.

neutral  philgoddard: This is a possibility, but you need Italian references - we know that "range of offences" is a phrase in English.

respective sector (of society)

Explanation:
"...of criminal punishment and its respective sector (of society)"

I think "tipico" is referring back to those touched by crime, punishment, law enforcement or whatever. As we are talking about people I think "sector" is the best word here.
