citizen scholar Explanation: 市井=community, town 研究者=researcher / scholar 市井の人々=ordinal citizens There is a word of "citizen scholar" and this word can be found in websites but I cannot find "citizen researcher". Then I chose "citizen scholar" Reference: http://www.cal.msu.edu/future-students/citizenscholars https://graduateschool.vt.edu/transformative-graduate-education-experience/citizen-scholar-engagement.html |

Lay researcher Explanation: I saw a page where this type of researcher was said to not have had much peer review or something like that (see the link below). Sounds like a lay researcher to me. Example sentence(s):

hobby researcher Explanation: What 市井 here signifies is that the person is not affiliated with a university or research institute, being employed as a professional. The person is doing research for fun. I think "lay" and "non-professional" are fine, but some of these researchers may have significant knowledge including formal education in the field. The person just didn't chose to make it a profession, or didn't have the opportunity. |

Backyard researcher/inventor Explanation: It may depend on the degree of sophistication of the research and the degree to which the results are accepted in the wider scientific community. "Backyard" implies someone who works on their own. |
