Portuguese term or phrase: e seu lugar de fala
I am not sure I understand this term. Does it mean a place where she has a voice?

The document is below:

Neste contexto, o empoderamento e capital social como ampliação da liberdade de escolher e agir, do poder dos indivíduos sobre os recursos e decisões que afetam suas próprias vidas, se associa às questões de gênero, da agricultora familiar e seu lugar de fala.

Hi there colleague!

It appears we've had this pop up previously on ProZ, the chosen answer was place of speech. For a bit of context, when we're talking about "lugar de fala" in a context of empowerment, pertains to the voice of the person who has authority over a subject (ex. a single mother talking about her experiences, a jewish person speaking about judaism, etc).

I hope this helps, and I am sending over a link to the last time this was asked.

Have a great evening :)

standpoint

Explanation:
"Lugar de fala" is a term "imported" to Portuguese by Djamila Ribeiro in conversation with earlier black feminist theorists, such as Patricia Hill Collins and bell hooks, who have written on Standpoint Theory. Generally speaking, it means each one of us speaks and acts in the world from a standpoint defined by our social, racial or gender identities (for more, see the Britannica link below).

In academic texts, I often see the terms "standpoint" and "positionality" used to refer to what we understand as "lugar de fala", but I chose "standpoint" because the book I'm referencing below uses this term profusely.

"Place of speech", in that sense, is a term that seems to be a direct translation of "lugar de fala", since I could only find it in academic texts written by Portuguese native speakers, not by English native speakers.

Example sentence(s):
  • "This legacy of struggle constitutes one of several core themes of a Black women’s standpoint." (Patricia Hill Collins, 2000, p. 27)

and their place of discourse

Explanation:
I suggest "place of discourse" for "lugar de fala" as it is more inclusive, it encompasses both written and spoken communication. Compare:

speech: (1) the expression of or the ability to express thoughts and feelings by articulate sounds. (2) a formal address or discourse delivered to an audience.

discourse: written or spoken communication or debate

Source: Oxford Dictionaries

The following examples demonstrate the use of "lugar de fala" in a wider sense (both written and spoken).

- https://revistacult.uol.com.br/home/lugar-de-fala-e-etico-po...

Márcia Tiburi's philosophical commentary sheds some light on the real meaning of "lugar de fala". It's not simply a standpoint. A standpoint is a point of view. There's more to "lugar de fala" than just a viewpoint. "Lugar de fala" implies a "methodological place of discourse". Any given person can have hundreds of viewpoints (on various subjects), but his/her place of discourse is much more limited. For example, Martin Luther King Jr.'s place of discourse pertained to racial discrimination in America. He was the mouthpiece for the Civil Rights Movement.

Example Sentences

This past week, responding to an outcry of such claims, Dorsey [Twitter CEO] acknowledged that the company "didn't fully predict or understand" the real-world negative consequences that come with being an open and public place of discourse.

"We acknowledge that now, and are determined to find holistic and fair solutions. We have witnessed abuse, harassment, troll armies, manipulation through bots and human-coordination, misinformation campaigns, and increasingly divisive echo chambers," his statement read in part. "We aren't proud of how people have taken advantage of our service, or our inability to address it fast enough."- https://www.revolt.tv/2018/3/4/20821807/ava-duvernay-issa-ra...

"The second paper interrogated the spatialization of HIV through an analysis of a Seattle-based HIV prevention campaign, investigating specifically how the place of discourse affords a space for the largely imagined community of queer."- https://kb.osu.edu/bitstream/handle/1811/36778/2/21_2perry_p...

From a doctoral dissertation:

"Há variados graus dessa fonte, no entanto a tendência é que o lugar de fala se reduz ao enquadramento policial ou jurídico, sobre o ato em si e sua (i)legalidade. (...)
There are varying degrees of that source, but the trend is that the place of discourse is reduced to a police or legal framework, the act itself and its (il)legality."
