Espumas de carbono são materiais com estrutura porosa constituídas principalmente de macroporos, que apresentam alta área específica, peso leve, condutividade térmica e elétrica, elevada estabilidade térmica, sendo aplicadas como adsorventes, eletrodos, suportes para catalisadores, isolantes térmicos a altas temperaturas entre outros. Variados métodos e matérias primas foram usadas para síntese das espumas de carbono, entre essas se destacam as fontes de petróleo e derivados, porém com o limite e escassez destes, torna-se necessário a busca por matérias primas provenientes de fontes renováveis ou biomassa.
