It's necessary in some way to distinguish them from big partnerships or associations, and subsidiaries of agrogiants, which are also private. All the versions with "peasant" or "peasant (farmer)" come out not really in English.

agree  Oleg Lozinskiy: ++ for "distinguish them from" (though this 'service' apparently belongs to a Russian official web-site, and therefore, imho, should follow the conventional - including FAO -translations of the relevant RF legislation).
