The Asker of this terminology question did not provide any context, except that the topic is fencing. I.e., the term is not given in a sentence from the work he is translating. Therefore, it is impossible to answer his question of how it should be translated precisely into English. This is why I gave several suggestions in my answer. I am sure my answer is not the only translation that could be used, but like I said--without any specific examples from the text, it is not possible to verify this.

Moving your rear foot *after* you've already advanced with your front foot is not closing the distance, it's maintaining your position (unless you prefer to stand spread-legged, kibadati-style). You're failing to pay attention to the original question where it's expressly stated that the movement follows the advance.

Plus, do kindly explain how can you physically close the distance by widening your stance with the rear foot (in effect, stepping away). Yet this is precisely what your 'source' defines as подшаг ("сокращение дистанции расширением <...> позиции"). Need I remind you that we're talking about the rear leg only? Your 'source' is clearly using the term in an entirely different way (specifically, applying to to either foot).

Что такое подшаг?
Подшаг — сокращение дистанции расширением либо сокращением позиции.
Что такое сокращение позиции - уменьшение расстояния между стопами без изменения геометрии позиции.
Что такое Расширение позиции — увеличение расстояния между стопами без изменения геометрии позиции.
И еще Сокращение дистанции — уменьшение расстояния между центрами тяжести бойцов.

You don't really read the 'sources' you're citing, do you? This 'stage sword' glossary of yours defines подшаг as a means of closing or widening the distance between the combatants, not a means of altering the stance (the distance between one's feet). Which makes it irrelevant to original question where it is, essentially, bringing up the rear foot *after* the advance.

It will not alter the distance between the combatants as you say, it shortens the distance between the footsteps. Distance between the first and rear legs if I describe more clearly. Please, first read carefully before judgement.

"короткий шаг вперед задней ногой, вслед за шагом передней" will not alter the distance between the combatants (the definition you're now advocating), hence 'pitching the distance' has nothing to do with the term OP has been looking for.

I think this is more close to подшаг,
Pinching the distance (by shortening or expanding the distance between footsteps.
Мы не можем считать правильным если кто то иностранец что-то говорит по видео, или кто-то написал и нашли в гугле. Многие ответы считается правильным в кудозе из-за этого.

Short advance and short step are wrong here. It is just confusing. The video doesn't say anything about "подшаг". It is leading you to blunder.

Just you are confusing by listing this video. I also watched the video you listed before you post your answer, but in your video there is nothing about подшаг-it is just about "advancing", шаг and подшаг taken together-are advancing movement. And stepping is not relevant here as I described before.

Шпажисты, саблисты и прочие НЕ ВОЛОЧАТ ногу. Учитывая базовое значение предложенной лексемы (drag), этот момент довольно принципиален. Иначе как вы объясните, что dragging постоянно встречается в описании наиболее распространённых ошибок начинающих фехтовальщиков?

"Take care not to drag the foot along the ground, this is an invitation to stumble when on uneven ground."

"Don’t drag your feet, don’t cross your feet, keep your weight centered and balanced" (второй пункт, с очевидностью, не касается саблистов)

"one of the most common problems of fencers at many levels is that as they move forward, they "drag" their back foot"

"Care must be taken not to drag the feet along the ground."

"Also, make sure that you do not drag either your rear foot, or advancing front foot."

Продолжать можно до бесконечности.

Одно и тоже, передний stepping задний dragging, даже в каратэ одинаково. У всех боевых искусствах так называется. В различных боевых исскуствах конечно различается, но в общем одно и тоже. В вашем видео тоже передний - stepping , задний dragging. Задний повторяет переднего, но как dragging, не stepping.
