Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Aerospace / Aviation / Space / Air traffic Control towers
Spanish term or phrase: fanal
Just that : fanal - this refers to the room where ATC controllers sit and work with a large glass window and
view of the aerodrome they are working at.
Local translations give the word as 'lantern'- which may be true for a ship's lamp and /or a lighthouse lantern room, but there is no evidence anywhere that the same word is used in English for this area of a control tower.

visual control room
Explanation:

The logistics of fabricating the steel off site, and then transporting the elements (particularly the large lantern control pod) to the site across one of the main runways, were daunting. The sequential jacking of the modules into position was innovative and effective.

ABP are world leaders in the design, manufacture and installation of Visual Control Room’s (VCR) for Air Traffic Control Towers. We have over 40 years experience and have completed over 60 projects in 25 countries, from small airfields to some of the world’s largest international airports.

I was going to suggest 'lantern (control pod)' as per my second reference but I changed my mind.

The overall height of the VCT structure, resulting from the operational requirement for a control room floor level of 80m above ground level, will be an overall height of 86.9m. Analysis of the brief established that the new facility comprises two main elements: The Cab (including the Visual Control Room or VCR) and its associated Support Facilities. In order to provide a slim, elegant structure and in an effort to keep the tower as light and elegant as possible, most of the support accommodation (technical rooms and associated plant) has been separated from the Tower and is located in a single storey support facility at ground level.

The ATCT shading system by Reflex-Rol U.K. are bespoke systems, designed specifically for Air Traffic Control Towers, also known as VCR’s (Visual Control Rooms).

The unique shape and plane of VCR windows demand bespoke systems, wider in the top than the bottom and usually inclined under an angle of between 12 to 16 degrees.

agree  neilmac: From Taña's 3rd link, it looks like it's called different things in different places...

-> That seems to be the case.

agree  Marie Wilson: And agree with Neil. More than one way to say this.

-> Yes, that's what I discovered, too! Thank you, Marie :-)

agree  Taña Dalglish: I also agree with Neil and Marie, but I think VCR is the most recognisable.//While it may sound nice, there is very little to support the word "pod"; I would stick with the recognised terms.

-> I agree with you, though my favourite is 'control pod'! Thank you, Taña :-) // Exactly, that's why I changed my answer before posting.
