The island - including Isla de la Juventud - is to my knowledge still transitioning from an ex-Soviet Satellite Socialist State with state-owned enterprises, rather than private companies, and modelled on the GDR's VEB: Volkseigene Betriebe exported to Cuba. By the same token, diligent Cuban workers used go on group holiday tours or be exported for 'experience' to the East Germany of old, leaving an indelible mark on both economies and societies.
