Spanish term or phrase: tener prensa
This is a paper by an Argentine theorist who works with representations of poverty ("bárbaro" is an expression in Argentina to mean "wonderful, but that's not the question):

agree  philgoddard: I think it might be better to make it less specific, and just say "getting talked about".

to make news

Explanation:
'The exotic makes news' doesn't tell us whether it's a good or a bad, interesting or normally news-worthy item.

The interesting line is:
'Lo bárbaro deviene bárbaro.' Note that 'lo bárbaro' is 'the great thing' while 'el bárbaro' is 'the barbarian'.
'The great thing becomes any of barbarous, barbaric, barbarian, maybe even superb.'

'Great' can be any of 'large', 'important' or 'very good', and three of the things that if can become are negative.

Barbaric, barbarian and barbarism are all indicatives of cruelty, which stand against civilization, as each one may pose a threat to any civilized society. One topic area of university study was based on barbarism as opposed to civilization, along with the negative effects of such surrounding people's efforts to maintain stability. Similarly, the negative concept of antithesis (the breakdown of language) versus thesis (the collective structure of the phrases and parts of speech which together make positive spoken and written language) was compared.

Example sentence(s):
  • The post-media time, in many ways has brought both connotations to the point in which the barbarian becomes exotic and may sometimes be an object of respect and courtesy while at other times, may be in a political solidarity campaign.

The 'exotic' will make the press

Explanation:
Tener prensa is used a lot in Argentina, and it means to be on the news or the press. So, lo exótico is the subject and tener prensa is the verb.

Example sentence(s):
  • Tener mala prensa
  • To have bad press

Traducir "tener mala prensa" a Inglés: have bad press reviews, have bad press reports

So, does "tener prensa" mean that it "becomes current", "becomes mainstream", "a mainstay" (bárbaro > "wonderful" having a positive connotation), or does "tener prensa" mean "that the media has free rein to promote whatever they wish"?.

That is why I am torn as to whether this is all positive "De un modo muy particular lo bárbaro deviene bárbaro ..." and there is more to it, and perhaps I am playing devil's advocate here (?).
