Although "cucharín" seem to be a diminutive form of "cuchara" (spoon), "cucharón de muestreo" (see images in link) is translated as a "sampling spoon", although it does look like a sort of spoon.

And whether they apply "-ón" or "-in", it's still basically a type of spoon, with sides, whereas a trowel is usually either flat or curved, without sides to stop the sampled material falling off....
