Source text - Spanish E: Buenas Dan, ¿me puedes una visión general de la política militar y el reclutamiento militar en tu país? ¿Como tiene lugar en la escuelas, la TV o en las calles?.
DC: En le caso de chile la propaganda militar es una de las herramientas mas importantes para influenciar a la juventud. En chile, los militares no van a las escuelas, por lo general no se hace, ni tampoco hay un programa de gobierno que vaya a las escuelas y participen, sino mas bien en fechas importantes se llena de gigantografias en los medios de transporte. Mas bien ponen afiches y propagandas en relación al servicio militar invitando a que los jóvenes se inscriban voluntariamente. Son las fechas de inscripción de las escuelas castrenses como la escuela naval, de infantería, castrenses, etc...
E: Que argumentos utiliza el ejercito para publicitarse? ¿Usan el salario, el patriotismo, la identidad nacional, la figura del héroe?
DC: En estos momentos Chile esta atravesando por un situación complicada socialmente y políticamente. Porque el movimiento estudiantil ha generado una critica hacia el estado y una critica también hacia el aparato represor del estado, entonces este año es la primera vez no se llenan los cupos de voluntarios desde que se hizo la reforma militar, que fue en el año 2000. Esto estaría directamente vinculado con esta critica y esta crisis que genero el movimiento estudiantil. Entonces la campaña estuvo mas bien orientada a buscar ese soldado héroe, de promocionar mucho a este soldado que ayudo mucho, por ejemplo en la catástrofe del terremoto del 2010.
Entonces se veían afiches con soldados sacando gente, llevando a otros soldados, un amigo de lealtad. Llamando a que si tu te inscribes voluntariamente al Servicio Militar vas a formar parte de este grupo de gente solidaria y de sujetos tan importantes en los momentos difíciles que pudiera atravesar el país.
Translation - English Could you give me a general overview of the military policy and recruitment process in your country? Where does it take place? In schools, on TV or in the streets?
In Chile, military advertising is one of the most important tools used to influence youngsters. In Chile, the military doesn’t promote in schools; in general they don’t do that. Neither are there government programmes in place to go to schools. Instead they fill public transport spaces with adverts on important dates. They also put up posters and adverts about military service, where young people can sign up voluntarily. These are put up on sign-up boards for the various army academies such as naval, infantry, military etc.
Which arguments does the army use when promoting? Do they use salaries, patriotism, national identity, heroic figures?
Right now Chile is going through a complicated situation both economically and politically. The student’s movement has brought forward criticisms of the state and its machinery of repression. So this year is the first time since the military reform in 2000 that the volunteer quota hasn’t been fulfilled. This is directly linked with the criticisms and crisis that the student’s movement has created. As such, the advertising campaign was focused more on looking for the ‘heroic soldier’. This was done by promoting the idea of the helpful soldier who, for example, helped a lot in the earthquake catastrophe in 2010. So we saw posters of soldiers saving people, carrying other soldiers; a loyal friend. The message was that if you sign up voluntarily for military service, you will form a part of this important military group which helps the country get through itsdifficult times.
