光を電気に変える、太陽光発電
太陽電池は、使われる半導体によっていろいろ種類があります。大きくはシリコン系と化合物系他があります。現在の主流はシリコン系です。さらに、シリコン系の半導体には、結晶系と薄膜系があります。結晶系はシリコンを溶かして固めた後、スライスした基板を用いて作りますが、薄膜系はガラスなどの上にプラズマなどを利用して非常に薄いシリコンの膜を成膜して作ります。薄膜系は大きな面積のものを大量に作る事ができますが、変換効率や信頼性の面で、まだ結晶系シリコンに劣っています。
シリコン系
1.結晶系シリコン
• 単結晶
最も古い歴史があります。200μm～300μmの薄いシリコンの単結晶の板（基板）に太陽電池を作ります。基板の値段が高いのが欠点ですが、性能や信頼性に優れています。
• 多結晶
比較的小さな結晶が集まった多結晶でできている基板に太陽電池を作ったもので、単結晶より安価で、作りやすいことから現在の主流となっています。変換効率は、やや単結晶に劣ります。
2．薄膜系シリコン
アモルファス（非晶質）シリコンや結晶シリコンをガラスなどの基板の上に1μm内外の非常に薄い膜を形成させて作った太陽電池です。大面積で量産ができるという特長がありますが、結晶系シリコンと比較して性能面に課題があります。

1．化学物系
• CIS系
化合物半導体の一種で、銅とインジウムとセレン等を原料とした薄膜太陽電池です。製造工程が簡単で高性能が期待できることから技術開発が進んでいます。
• 高効率化合物半導体
ガリウムヒ素など特別な化合物半導体の基板を使った超高性能（変換効率：30～40％）太陽電池です。
現在は、コストが高く宇宙などの特殊用途ですが、将来は身近で使えるよう技術開発が行われています。
2．有機物系
• 色素増感型
酸化チタンについた色素が、光を吸収して電子を放出することで発電する、新しいタイプの太陽電池です。簡単につくれ、応用範囲が広いため今後の発展が期待されます。

Solar photovoltaic devices, which convert light to electricity
There are different kinds of photovoltaic devices depending on which semiconductor is used. They are largely divided into two categories, silicon solar cells and others, such as compound solar cells. The current majority is silicon solar cells. Silicon semiconductors include crystalline and thin-film ones. Crystalline semiconductors are produced in the way where they solidify melted silicon and slice it into substrates, and thin-film semiconductors are made of glass or other materials as their bases and fairly thin silicon film deposited on this glass using plasma deposition or other means. It is easier to produce large size thin-film solar cells than crystalline ones. However, thin-film cells are as yet inferior to crystalline ones in conversion efficiency and reliability.
Silicon solar cells
1. Crystalline Silicon cells
- Monocrystalline
Monocrystalline solar cells have the longest history. A 200 - 300 μm thin silicon monocrystalline substrates is used as solar cell base. The drawback of these cells is the high price of the substrates, but these cells are with good performance and reliability.
- Polycrystalline
A polycrystalline substrate with an aggregate of relatively small crystals is used as solar cell base. They are less expensive and easier to be manufactured than monocrystalline cells and are the current majority. Conversion efficiency is slightly inferior to that of monocrystalline cells.
2. Thin-film silicon cells
Thin-film silicon cells are solar cells that comprise fairly thin amorphous or crystalline silicon layers deposited in about 1μm thickness on substrates such as glass. They have characteristic feature of easy mass production of large area cells, but they are inferior to crystalline silicon cells in their performance.

1. Compounds cells
- Copper Indium Selenide (CIS) cells
These are thin-film solar cells made of compound semiconductor comprising copper, indium, selenide and other elements. They are developing due to their simple production process and high performance expected.
- High efficiency compound semiconductor solar cells
These are super high efficiency (conversion efficiency: 30 – 40 %) solar cells, which are constituted of a substrate of specific chemical compound semiconductors such as gallium arsenide. They are for specific usages including space application due to their high cost, but they are being developed to be used more affordable.
2. Organic solar cells
- Dye-sensitized solar cells
These are new type solar cells, which generate electricity in the way where pigment on titanium dioxide absorbs the light and emits electrons. They are easy to be produced and have various applications, so their future development is anticipated.

Japanese PV shipments increase 62% year-over-year as imports boom
Japanese demand for solar photovoltaic (PV) modules reached 1.73 GW between January 1st and March 31st, 2013, 800 MW of which was met with imports, according to data from the Japanese Photovoltaic Energy Association (JPEA).
This brings the nation to a total of 3.81 GW of demand during its fiscal year 2012, which ended on March 31st. This includes 2.37 GW of domestic module shipments and 1.44 GW of imports.
Japanese PV imports out-pace exports.
As the Japanese market grows and the nation imports increasingly greater amounts of PV, exports have remained nearly constant at around 100 MW each quarter. Of a total of 4.21 GW of module shipments, including 400 MW of exports, crystalline silicon PV made up 3.41 GW and thin-film PV another 803 MW.
Overall shipments of PV cells and modules increased to 4.37 GW, a 62% increase over 2011, led by a boom in multi-crystalline cell and module shipments, which doubled to 2.01 GW.
Thin film shipments increase rapidly
Thin film shipments are also increasing rapidly over the year, jumping from 106 MW in the first quarter to 299 MW in the fourth quarter, which ended on March 31st.
JPEA does not disaggregate thin film imports versus domestic production; however copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film maker Solar Frontier KK (Tokyo, Japan) has reported strong quarterly results and has announced that it will re-start its Miyazaki number 2 plant in July 2013 to increase capacity. | Translation - Japanese
