Polish to English: Poles Apart - treatment of a TV series
Source text - Polish “Poles Apart” to opowieść o polskich emigrantach mieszkających w Irlandii.
Translation - English “Poles Apart” is a story about Polish immigrants living in Ireland. The trip to the emerald isle changes their lives irreversibly. Throughout the film we follow their stories, which interweave, creating a narrative about Polish emigration, the hardships of living abroad, as well as the coexistence of two nations and two cultures and the way they are gradually opening to each other. The portrayed events are diverse – some tragic (as the death of Radek – a young man who, having graduated in history, left for the Island to earn for a flat in Poland, never to return home, stabbed to death with screwdrivers by members of a Dublin juvenile gang), and others filled with joy and hope (as the love of Trevor and Dorota – an Irish doctor and a Polish nurse, working together in a Dublin hospital). The stories form integral parts of one common portrait of Poles trying to feel at home in Ireland, but also of all economic migrants who, after the EU’s enlargement, left Eastern Europe in search of better lives in richer countries. Various characters, representing different social statuses, interpersonal relations and national lifestyle habits (as the young architect, Agnieszka, or the local “boss” Big-Zbig, running a renovation company) appear to be equally able to adapt to new, highly competitive life conditions.

Source text - English When Francesca was first placed in her mother''s arms, Chloe Serritella Day burst into tears and insisted that the sisters at the private London hospital where she had given birth had lost her baby. Any imbecile could see that this ugly little creature with its mashed head and swollen eyelids could not possibly have come from her own exquisite body.
Since no husband was present to comfort the hysterical Chloe, it was left to the sisters to assure her that most newborns weren''t at their best for several days. Chloe ordered them to take away the ugly little imposter and not come back until they had found her own dear baby. She then reapplied her makeup and greeted her visitors -- among them a French film star, the secretary of the British Home Office, and Salvador Dali -- with a tearful account of the terrible tragedy that had been perpetrated upon her. The visitors, long accustomed to the beautiful Chloe''s dramatics, merely patted her hand and promised to look into the matter. Dali, in a burst of magnanimity, announced he would paint a surrealistic version of the infant in question as a christening gift, but mercifully lost interest in the project and sent a set of vermeil goblets instead.
A week passed. On the day she was to be released from the hospital, the sisters helped Chloe dress in a loose-fitting black Balmain sheath with a wide organdy collar and cuffs. Afterward, they guided her into a wheelchair and deposited the rejected infant in her arms. The intervening time had done little to improve the baby''s appearance, but in the moment she gazed down at the bundle in her arms, Chloe experienced one of her lightning-swift mood changes. Peering into the mottled face, she announced to one and all that the third generation of Serritella beauty was now assured. No one had the bad manners to disagree, which, as it turned out, was just as well, for within a matter of months, Chloe had been proved correct.
Chloe''s sensitivity on the subject of female beauty had its roots in her own childhood. As a girl she had been plump, with an extra fold of fat squaring off her waist and small fleshy pads obscuring the delicate bones of her face. She was not heavy enough to be considered obese in the eyes of the world, but was merely plump enough to feel ugly inside, especially in comparison to her sleek and stylish mother, the great Italian-born couturiere, Nita Serritella. It was not until 1947, the summer when Chloe was twelve years old, that anyone told her she was beautiful.
Przyzwyczajeni do skłonności pięknej Chloe do dramatyzowania, goście pobłażliwie poklepywali jej dłoń i obiecywali zbadać sprawę.
W dniu wyjścia ze szpitala siostry pomogły jej założyć luźno dopasowaną czarną suknię Balmaina z szerokim kołnierzem i mankietami z organdyny.
Usadowiły ją następnie w wózku i zdeponowały odrzucone niemowlę w jej rękach.

W połączeniu ze zróżnicowaniem i odrębnością gatunkową grupy subdominantów, stawia to nadrzeczne łęgi wśród siedlisk o najwyższej różnorodności ptaków lęgowych w Europie Środkowej (Tomiałojć, Dyrcz 1993). Liczba ptaków (osobników, gatunków), jaką można tu spotkać na dowolnie wskazanym wycinku terenu o wielkości rzędu 10 – 100 ha jest wyraźnie wyższa niż w analogicznej wielkości fragmentach większości innych siedlisk krajowych, włączając w to pierwotne drzewostany Puszczy Białowieskiej (Chylarecki 2006, porównaj Wesołowski i in. 2002).
Translation - English The role of the SPA Natura 2000 site Middle Vistula Valley for the population of endangered European bird species, with special emphasis on its Warsaw section.
Breeding birds of a braided river’s stream bed (see Chylarecki 2008). The Natura 2000 site Middle Vistula Valley is Poland’s most important breeding ground for two species of birds specified in Article 4(1) and Annex II of the Bird Directive – the Common Tern and the Little Tern – sustaining the existence of, respectively, 40% and 80% of their Polish populations. For another three species of the group – the Mediterranean Gull, the Common Kingfisher, and the Syrian Woodpecker – the area is among the ten biggest Polish breeding grounds (Sidło et al. 2004). The present Natura 2000 site is also the main breeding ground for a few other species with an unfavourable conservation status in Europe or in Poland – the Common Gull (at least 70% of the Polish population nests in the area), the Little Ringed Plover (ca. 15%), the Ringed Plover (ca. 40%), the Common Sandpiper, the Common Merganser, or the Sand Martin.
Breeding birds of riparian areas (see Chylarecki 2008). Older riparian forest stands by the Vistula River are habitats for an exceptionally diversified group of breeding birds. The core of the group consists of species comparatively common in Poland (the Chiffchaff, the Blackcap, the Thrush Nightingale, the Willow Warbler, the Chaffinch, The Icterine Warbler), yet their density in the area is remarkably high, amounting to more than 100 breeding pairs per 10 ha (Czarnecki 1975; Kowalski 1997; Keller et al. 1998). The riverside riparian area is thus among the richest habitats in breeding species in Central Europe (Tomiałojć, Dyrcz 1993). The number of birds (specimens, species) found in any random part of the area (covering 10 – 100 ha of land) is clearly higher than the number found in areas of corresponding sizes in other habitats of the country, including the primal forest stands of the Białowieża Forest (Chylarecki 2006; see also Wesołowski et al. 2002).
