The WWC is shown on a screen in their portal, not on a physical PO. I was familiar with that particular type of task and I focused on completing the necessary steps -- not on checking the WWC. I likely would have completed the job anyway, since this is a regular client, but I did make a stink about it afterwards and asked them to check their word counting method. They trust that XTM's word count is accurate.

Thanks XTM!
Elina Sellgren wrote:

I have had to drop a once major client because they migrated fully to XTM. Now a minor client announced that they are migrating to XTM as well and naturally neither will allow exporting. My guess is that clients like the security of a cloud tool. But there are other tools that are more ergonomical and allow this as well.

I'm just so tired of having to drop clients over something like this.
Even though I agreed with this post two years ago, I continued to accept revising occasional XTM projects—fortunately not many. However, today, after receiving negative feedback on a project, I finally cut the cord.

The quality-affecting issues are simply too numerous: consistency across files is impossible to manage, the search and replace feature is unreliable (sometimes it claims "all occurrences replaced" when this is untrue, beware!), I cannot search for duplicate spaces, and clicking in a segment sometimes places the cursor elsewhere. The list is endless. Have you tried to select a word in the target that is listed in the glossary? It keeps opening a menu, making the selection very difficult. 😡

(First, I edit all of the fuzzy matches so that their translations are correct, and they can be treated as 100% matches.) Then:

My workflow:
I take the ICE/100% matches and create a TM from it.
Then, I analyze the entire source text against the TM.

KD42's workflow:
KD takes the ICE/100% matches and create a reversed TM from it.
Then he does the translation, so that every segment has a target text.
Then, he analyzes the entire target text against the reversed TM.

I hope you realise that these two workflows will result in word counts that are very similar.

(The numbers in this post differ from that of my original post because in the analysis in my original post I had already taken care of the pre-translated ICE/100% and fuzzy matches, whereas in this post I took the original bilingual file and created a TM from it and then analyzed it against both the source and target columns of the final bilingual file.)

Original source text analyzed against originally created TM:

Final target text analyzed against the original created & reversed TM:

As a reminder:

Client's weighted word count in the purchase order:
1129 words

[Edited at 2025-11-23 18:45 GMT]

Forum: XTM Cloud support
Topic: Weighted word count woes
Poster: Samuel Murray
Post title: @Kd42

I think this shows the danger of asking ChatGPT for an analysis.
kd42 wrote:
Vague or Speculative Elements
His assertion that XTM does not pre-translate all available fuzzy matches.
This is based on observation. In XTM, there were pre-translated fuzzy matches. But when I analyzed the non-pre-translated segments against the ICE/100% segments, I found additional fuzzy matches that were not present in XTM initially. Conclusion: XTM does not pre-translate all available fuzzy matches.

Why do you think ChatGPT would characterize this as vague or speculative?
Vague or Speculative Elements
His claim that missing fuzzy matches during pre-translation must be very high-percentage matches (97–99%).
This was not actually a claim. It was a hypothesis.

The basis of the hypothesis is something that ChatGPT may not be aware of, namely that a high number of very high fuzzy matches contributes to a sharp reduction in the weighted word count compared to the natural word count (this is always true and any translator who has used a CAT tool extensively knows this). Of course, another thing that contributes to a sharp reduction in the weighted word count are exact repetitions. However, I took that into account during the analysis: there were insufficient exact repetitions to result in the sharp drop in the weighted word count.

In this particular case, the weighted word count was nearly half of the natural word count. This could only have happened if (a) around 50% of the words were in exact repetitions or (b) around 70-80% of the words were in very high fuzzy matches, or (c) a combination of these. We know that #a is not true because I have measured it, and you don't actually need access to a TM to count exact repetitions.
Vague or Speculative Elements
His interpretation that XTM’s behavior is “mysterious.”
I do not apologize for using the word "mysterious". I could not find a logical explanation for XTM's behaviour, and therefore I characterized it as "mysterious". This is neither vague nor speculative. It is a fact that I could not find a logical explanation for XTM's behaviour.
Vague or Speculative Elements
His conclusion that the discrepancy cannot be explained by the incomplete TM he created.
I suppose from ChatGPT's perspective, making an educated guess based on two decades of experience is "speculative", because it's just a guess.

It is true that the TM that I had created was not the client's full TM. However, my TM was based on the client's ICE/100% matches, and high fuzzy matching is performed on exactly those matches. Only lower fuzzy matches make use of non-ICE/100% matches within a TM, but low fuzzy matches would not result in a reduction to nearly half of the natural word count.

I'm not sure if ChatGPT knows how the pricing of fuzzy matching works.
Conclusion
His explanations are ... not supported by concrete evidence...
Yes, and the absence of concrete evidence is why it is valid to refer to it as "mysterious" (-: (-: (-:
He does not provide ... a full TM, GMX-V breakdown, internal fuzzy match report...
I'm not going to post the full TM here on ProZ.com, so it's not surprising that I did not provide it. If you're worried about the absence of a GMX-V breakdown, I suggest you Google for GMX+GILT+volume+metrics to see what a GMX+V breakdown is and why it would have been silly for me to have provided it. Finally, I did not provide the internal fuzzy match report because it didn't have a measurable impact on the numbers.
If you’d like, I can also provide:
A recommended procedure to accurately reproduce XTM weighted word counts outside XTM.
Yes, please. I'd LOVE to know how ChatGPT would have done it.
I recommend you to query a neural network on the matter, they don't lose patience and keep trying.
Yes, we can clearly see what the value is of asking ChatGPT (-: (-:

I was having trouble understanding your conclusions, so I put the forum thread into the LLM, here is what it has t say:
Final Assessment

Factual and Specific Elements
The numerical discrepancy he observed.
His methodology for extracting and analyzing segments.
His counts of internal fuzzies during translation (approximate but still grounded in observation).

Vague or Speculative Elements
His assertion that XTM does not pre-translate all available fuzzy matches.
His claim that missing fuzzy matches during pre-translation must be very high-percentage matches (97–99%).
His interpretation that XTM’s behavior is “mysterious.”

His conclusion that the discrepancy cannot be explained by the incomplete TM he created.

Conclusion
Samuel’s post contains a mixture of:
Factual, specific observations (counts, methods, workflow details), and
Speculative interpretations about how XTM behaves and why the client’s weighted word count differs.
His observations are reliable.
His explanations are plausible but not supported by concrete evidence and therefore fall into the category of vague suspicions.
He does not provide enough technical investigation (e.g., full TM, GMX-V breakdown, internal fuzzy match report) to support his conclusions about XTM’s behavior.

If you’d like, I can also provide:
A clearer breakdown of what likely explains the discrepancy,
A more technical explanation of XTM fuzzy matching behavior,
A recommended procedure to accurately reproduce XTM weighted word counts outside XTM.
With such a mix, it is very unlikely that you are going to arrive at a solution or get some useful advice, like mine was, because your "I don't see how this is necessary" conflicts with my personal positive results of using this procedure in several similar situations.

I recommend you to query a neural network on the matter, they don't lose patience and keep trying.

Forum: XTM Cloud support
Topic: Weighted word count woes
Poster: Samuel Murray
Post title: @Kd42
kd42 wrote:
1 - Create a TM from this job only, before you worked on it, and reverse it.
2 - Do the translation and export the document for bilingual review, this will preserve segmentation. Delete everything except your translation.
3 - Run analysis against your reversed TM...
I don't see how this is necessary, unless you are going to make edits to 100/ICE matches.

When I copy text from XTM to a local file (using a pair of AutoIt scripts), it creates a table with columns for segment number, source text, pre-translated target text, and the match percentage. I don't try to reverse engineer an accurate fuzzy match analysis (because I don't know how XTM calculates fuzziness), but it does allow me to separate the pre-translated fuzzy matches from the rest of the text. I can then use the 100%/ICE matches to create a TM for the job. I can then use an external CAT tool to do a word count against that TM on the untranslated text (and/or on the fuzzy pre-translated text) to see what the remaining weighted word count is.

I must say, I was surprised that there were so many fuzzy matches in my analysis (i.e. empty segments in XTM which actually had fuzzy matches to 100%/ICE segments). One would think that XTM should be able to catch these fuzzy matches itself, and pre-translate them. There must be some kind of mysterious reason why XTM doesn't pre-translate all fuzzy matches initially.
It is possible that the pre-translated fuzzy matches are not the only fuzzy matches that are available from the client's TM. In other words, when XTM creates the pre-translation, is pre-propagates only *some* of the possible fuzzy matches from the TM. The other fuzzy matches then appear during the translation process, while you translate.

That is the only think that I can think that might account for this. But that's not it. The un-propagated fuzzy matches would have had to be mostly 97-99% matches and it would have had to be 90% of all remaining segments. Remember, the proposed weighted word count was nearly HALF of my calculated weighted word count for uniques.

Based on what I could see during translation, there were some internal fuzzy matching (I'd say perhaps 1500 words were 75-85% internal fuzzies), but nothing that would cut the weighted word count in half.
Dear Samuel, I think this is because your TM is incomplete, it does not contain the TUs for the fuzzy matches included in the initial analysis. Therefore, your analysis does not contain these fuzzies, which increases the no-match word count.

There is an easy and reliable workflow which I use when I need to know the actual amount of work I performed.
1 - Create a TM from this job only, before you worked on it, and reverse it.
2 - Do the translation and export the document for bilingual review, this will preserve segmentation. Delete everything except your translation.
3 - Run analysis against your reversed TM, apply your normal rate and fuzzy discounts, and get the total amount. Because the TM is reversed, you are going to be checking the "pre-work" target text against your finalized, human-edited target text.
4 - Compare the total amount obtained using the above workflow with the PO.
5 - Make your conclusions.

NB: This also works very nicely with MTPE and review paid by the hour.
Forum: XTM Cloud support
Topic: Weighted word count woes
Poster: Michelle den Boer
Post title: Maybe internal fuzzy matches?

Is it possible that XTM calculated internal matches, i.e. fuzzy matches between segments that didn't match the TM? Trados doesn't do this, and I remember complaints from translators about a certain agency's CAT tool which did.

XTM's documentation refers to the GMX-V standard, which includes the ProjectFuzzyMatchedWordCount category, distinct from FuzzyMatchedWordCount. The definition is not very explicit, but it states "The first base occurrence of the fuzzy text unit is not counted, only subsequent matches", which would not apply to fuzzy matches between project and TM.

This might be in conflict with your impression of the workload, but it's the only technical explanation I could think of. There could be other reasons why it was a challenging text, or you could be used to a certain level of internal matches. I have no recent experience with XTM and I don't remember any wordcount issues.

Forum: XTM Cloud support
Topic: Weighted word count woes
Poster: Samuel Murray

Hello everyone

I thought I'd share today's experience with you guys.

I did a job for a client in XTM. 15000 words in total, but many of them were ICE and 100% matches. There were also pre-translated fuzzy matches ranging from 75% to 99%, but no more than 1000 words in total. The weighted word count listed on the work order was 1129 words.

Before I translated the text, I copied all segments to a file on my computer, and performed a word count on them myself. I created a temporary TM from the ICE and 100% matches and then did an analysis on the non-translated segments using that TM. The number of words with no match was 2061 words, with a 50-84% match 1194 words, and with a 85-99% match was 1935 words. (An additional 2276 words had 100% matches with that TM.)

I fail to see what calculation could possibly reduce 2061 + 1194 + 1935 down to 1129. Even the number of words with absolutely no fuzzy match at all was 2061, which is nearly double the weighted word count for the entire job. Based on the amount of time and effort I expended during the translation, I estimate the weighted word count to have been around 3500 words.

I have no idea what the engineers over at XTM are doing.

Samuel
Here's the Autohotkey script that switches text to uppercase or lowercase.
The shortcut is Shift F3 as usual, and it should work not just for XTM and other functionality challenged CAT web platforms, but also other platforms, like Gmail, etc. – can be made more targeted.
You should have Autohotkey 2.0 installed for it to work.
It has two parts: the actual script that first checks if the text is upper- or lowercase or mixture, and a small .ini that it uses to know which operation it did last time.
If it is all upper, it changes to lower. If it's all lower, it changes to upper, easy.
If it is a mixture "Like this", then it checks with the help of the .ini file, which option was last used, then switches to the opposite.

To use it at the most basic level:
1. In Windows Explorer, right click -> New -> Text Document
2. Open it and simply paste this text in it:

#Requires AutoHotkey v2.0
#SingleInstance force
ProcessSetPriority "High"
ListLines 0
SetDefaultMouseSpeed 0
SetControlDelay 0
SendMode "Input"

+F3::{
; Save current clipboard contents
ClipSaved := ClipboardAll()

; Clear clipboard and send Ctrl+C to copy selected text
Clipboard := ""
Send Send("^c")

;Slight delay to ensure copy completes
Sleep(100)

;Convert any copied formatted text to plain text.
A_Clipboard := A_Clipboard

;Checks text case
if (isUpper(A_Clipboard))
{
A_Clipboard := Format("{:L}", A_Clipboard)

}
else if (isLower(A_Clipboard))
{
A_Clipboard := Format("{:U}", A_Clipboard)
}
else
{
LastCase := IniRead("ChangeCase.ini", "Case", "LastCase")
if (LastCase = "Upper"){
A_Clipboard := Format("{:L}", A_Clipboard)
IniWrite "Lower", "ChangeCase.ini", "Case", "LastCase"
}
else
{
A_Clipboard := Format("{:U}", A_Clipboard)
IniWrite "Upper", "ChangeCase.ini", "Case", "LastCase"
}

}
;Paste the result
Send("^v")

;Slight delay to ensure paste completes
Sleep(100)

;Restore previous clipboard contents
Clipboard := ClipSaved
}

3. Save the file and close it. Rename it from New Text Document.txt to ChangeCase.ahk

4. Again, in Windows Explorer, in the same folder, right click -> New -> Text Document

5. Rename it from New Text Document.txt to ChangeCase.ini

6. To enable this function, double click on ChangeCase.ahk

7. To disable this function, click on the right corner of your Windows taskbar where the program icons are, find big light green H on dark green background, and choose "Exit"
(or "Suspend hotkeys", if you want to disable the script temporarily).

Hope that helps. Tested it on Notepad.exe and it worked great.

[Edited at 2025-05-30 16:41 GMT]

Translators who use Windows can do it in XTM with an Autohotkey script, but it would be better if XTM just implement it.

Forum: XTM Cloud support
Topic: Switching to all caps on XTM?
Poster: Valeria Maria Tafel
Post title: Sorry but...

I do not want to use a tool to use another tool! A CAT tool is already a tool and it SHOULD provide the uppercase/lowercase function, that's all. I can simply copy the words in a new Word file, change the case as I like, and copy it back in the CAT tool. That is very simple and quick and does not require the installation of another tool.
But my point is: why XTM - which is a company that creates CAT tools - ignores this need of translators?

[Edited at 2025-01-13 10:11 GMT]

[Edited at 2025-01-13 10:11 GMT]
