You can’t go lower than that. Also check the agency’s reviews before delving into the work, and ask for an advance payment, another one in the mid of the work and a final payment at the end. This will help protect you against scammers. It should be all in the agreement.
Good luck

Forum: Arabic
Topic: Inquiry about a book translation proposal that I got.
Poster: Osama Hayek

Hello Fellow translators:

I've been trying to get into Literature and book translation for ages. I got my second offer from a Turkish Publisher to translate a novel from Arabic to English. The novel is around 350 pages, and it uses delicate, hard to grasp terminology.

They asked me to propose a rate and a plan for the translation process. I really don't want to lose this opportunity, but it's still hard work, so it needs to be rewarding since it'll take almost 2.5 months to be done.

I asked for 5$ a page, which is way less than what I usually charge. But that's the lowest rate I can accept to make a living.

I don't want to lose another opportunity to get into this field, but I sensed that they think I overcharged them, so they might reconsider.

Is 5$ per page for literary translation too much? How much do you usually get for such work? If you have any tips for this field, please let me know.

Thanks.

Forum: Arabic
Topic: Meaning of the lyrics
Poster: a_jp
Post title: Islam? are you nutz?

He spent his youth on Zanzibar, before the black revolution and ethnic cleanings, when his family moved to G.B.
On Zanzibar the ruling class was of Arab and other origins, like Iranians. Therefore Arabic, he knew it (he also learned Japanese btw). Zoroastrians on the other hand could speak Farsi on Zanzibar.
Then Queen had also referred religious motifs before, like in '39, which is itself a science-fiction of facing a time paradox of interstellar travel, but "writing letters in the sand" is a reference to early christian pilgrims who were writing prayers in the sand.

So yes, he could play with religions quite frivolously.

And now, Tada!

Mustapha is Moses in Arabic.
And Ibrahim is Abraham.
So there it is said, Moses was a star, not just fire.

So he rather converted to Judaism than to Islam. (not really)
Or at least it is an attempted message of support to Palestinian Jews who also know these languages.
Maybe, I mean.

however, another Turkish guy said that those may be Prince Mustafa and grand vizier Ibrahim of Ottomans, who were said to be gays, and were slandered in treason and executed. But that theory is too far from his origins.

So it actually may be a gibberish from sentences learned in his childhood.

The most confusing here is "Allah will pray for you". Who do Allah pray to? Probably, that is some other exclamation which sounds like al-la. I am not sure here.

[Edited at 2024-04-18 10:05 GMT]

Forum: Arabic
Topic: writing the Arabic Numbers from the Keyboard
Poster: alex kuki
Post title: To type Arabic numbers from your keyboard

To type Arabic numbers from your keyboard, you typically don't need to change the keyboard layout; you can use the regular Arabic keyboard layout. In this layout, Arabic numbers correspond to the same keys as the English numbers on the standard QWERTY keyboard. Here's how to type Arabic numbers using the Arabic keyboard layout on a standard QWERTY keyboard:

Ensure that you have the Arabic keyboard layout activated on your device. You can do this through your device's language settings.

Open a text field or an application where you want to type Arabic numbers.

Use the regular number keys on your keyboard to type Arabic numbers. The mapping is as follows:

0: ٠
1: ١
2: ٢
3: ٣
4: ٤
5: ٥
6: ٦
7: ٧
8: ٨
9: ٩
Simply press the corresponding number key to type Arabic numbers as needed. There's no need to switch to a different keyboard layout for this purpose.

Are there any suggestions about the best translation into Arabic?

The reactants include 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, a p-styrenesulfonate salt, and a erucyl amidopropyl dimethyl allyl ammonium salt. This will also include initiating a free radical polymerization.

Ideally, the person should be a practicing Muslim as well as a native speaker of German and a skilled writer who is experienced with Islamic texts.

If anyone has recommendations or leads, please let me know.

So, for Example if someone says a sentence of 10 words, the 3 or 4 would be Arabic and the rest in Hebrew.

So, from my experience, I can resonate with your choice and agree with the rest that was mentioned above.

Forum: Arabic
Topic: Feedback needed on new term for "phygital"
Poster: Alaa Zeineldine
Post title: Explanation of "phygital"

Ahlan Muhammad,

Thanks for your positive feedback.

This is a short note I posted in the ATA ALD group forum on the term:

The link below provides a number of real world examples of phygital experiences. It is not a synonym for virtual.

[url removed] #:~:text=A%20classic%20example%20of%20phygital,in%20a%20specific%20physical%20space.

A good approximation is to consider phygital as a hybrid of both digital and physical experiences. For example, you physically sit at a restaurant table, but instead of looking up a paper menu, you use your mobile to scan a QR code to display the menu on your mobile and, optionally, make your order. Your order will then be delivered to your table by a waiter.

Regards,

Alaa

Forum: Arabic
Topic: Feedback needed on new term for "phygital"
Poster: Muhammad Atallah
Post title: I agree.

Hello Mr. Alaa,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the term "phygital." It's great to see efforts being made to find a suitable Arabic term for this relatively new concept.

I think your suggestion of "رقماديّ" has the potential to become widely used and recognized in the Arabic-speaking world.

Including a brief explanation of the term "رقماديّ" alongside its first usage may also be helpful in ensuring that readers fully comprehend its intended meaning. As the term becomes more widely used and recognized, the need for an explanation will likely diminish, and the term can be used on its own without any additional clarification.

I encourage you to pursue including this new term in your current translation project. I am positive that it will be well received and appreciated by your readers.

Thank you.

[Edited at 2023-04-15 10:50 GMT]

Forum: Arabic
Topic: Feedback needed on new term for "phygital"
Poster: Alaa Zeineldine

Hello All,

The relatively new term "phygital" in its most simplistic definition is "the combination of physical and digital" customer experience. Rather than post reference links here, the reader can find many references via a quick web search.

There are couple of existing translations for the term "phygital":

1. The obvious "lazy" translation is simply the transliteration:

فيجيتال

The issue here is that once a transliteration becomes a de facto standard, we are forced to deal with its disadvantages thereafter. An Arabic alternative that lends itself to Arabic language rules for plurals, gender, and declension is always a better choice; whether such an Arabic term is an adoption of an existing word from another context or a new coinage that has the look and feel of a true Arabic word.

2. The other obvious choice is just describing the term:

مادي/رقمي
المادي الرقمي
...

While sounding less alien than transliteration, this is too wordy and is just as problematic as transliteration when applying Arabic rules, or even more problematic.

My suggestion - New coined term:

رقماديّ

I contend that this coinage, once propagated, will sound as Arabic as its component terms رقمي and ماديّ. Moreover, all Arabic plural, gender and declension rules that apply to the word ماديّ can easily apply to the new term in a natural sounding way.

Needless to say, the coined term also reflects the required meaning in Arabic naturally and concisely too; just as the source term "phygital" does for English.

Your feedback will be greatly appreciated. If I get enough positive feedback, I might actually take the bold step of including the new term in a current translation project.
