I have been trying to figure a way out of this dilemma, and fortunately I found a way.

Since I type the manuscripts into an MS Word file to avoid relying on scans that are at times blurry or blotted with stains, the digital text is available for use. I thought about a highlighting method to highlight words in MS Word so I have a visual indication that I have this word in my glossary which is in MS Excel spreadsheet. Designing a macro to highlight words in MS Word is easy, but macro code does not recognize non-Latin characters. This means that adding Arabic words to a macro is impractical, since editing or updating them in the macro becomes impossible or will require additional steps that will complicate the process beyond practical use. So I reached a conclusion that the only viable option is to have a macro designed that highlights words in MS Word files which calls words from an MS Excel spreadsheet. I posted this task on Freelancer.com and hoped that it will be a possible code. Fortunately I found someone who wrote an MS Excel macro that reads/calls words from within the glossary by means of turning it into a macro enabled spreadsheet, which has a action button. Clicking this button will open an "Open file" dialogue box, where the user chooses the MS Word file to apply the process to, then the process will open the MS Word file and start highlighting until the list of words in MS Excel spreadsheet is finished. After this you have the highlights you want and can now save the MS Word file. This process will require manual changes to remove false positives, since it is better to ignore diacritics, hamzas, final yaa, and matching whole words. As such, a review will be required to remove wrong highlights.

I hope you find this workaround useful.

Hello

I am translating from Arabic into French and I have the same problems.

The solution I found is to make the i'rab of the sentence in my brain, and when I understand that the 'wa' is only a way to connect two sentences, I split the paragraph at this point, using the 'Split segment' functionality in SDL Trados Studio. I know many CAT tools enable you to do so.

This cannot be done automatically, since the 'wa' in Arabic has many meanings, but also, it is often attached to the first word of the sentence.

Concerning the term recognition, I did not find any other solution than to add each term with all the different 'damîr' attached to it and the broken plural forms and so on... These CAT tools are so bad to recognize the Arabic terms. Hope they will fix this problem one day. The problem become worse when there are 'harakat' attached to a word, which is very frequent when you translate classical Arabic documents.

If I'm not mistaken, one can change the languages by reinstalling Trados (this doesn't affect one's license).

Hullo Ebrahim,

I'm sorry, I must have been unclear.

When you install Studio, the installation software asks you what languages you wish to work with. I think Studio requires you to select five languages. I assume that you chose Arabic as one of these languages. The selection happens on installation, and is not accessible thereafter in the Studio interface.

I hope that clarifies matters.

For Farsi, I have installed a software that automatically changes the numbers when I change the keyboard language into Farsi. There should be a similar software for Arabic too.

You could try using an AutoHotKey script that creates shortcuts, like this:

Alt + 1 = ١
Alt + 2 = ٢
Alt + 3 = ٣
Alt + 4 = ٤
Alt + 5 = ٥
Alt + 6 = ٦
Alt + 7 = ٧
Alt + 8 = ٨
Alt + 9 = ٩
Alt + 0 = ٠

I don't either know how they are typed in MS Word or editor; I usually use [url removed] and then copy/paste... but that was when I had a limited number of them....
now that I am translating a big document (vehicle technical specifications) from German into Arabic with a lot of these numbers, I am trying to figure out how to write them directly using SDL Trados ....without copy and paste number by number which is a very boring and time-consuming process....so it is about typing them in a translation target Arabic text.

I have been translating Arabic alchemical manuscripts into English for few years, and wanted to use CAT tools to compile a translation memory and glossary, to use my previous translations in case similar text occurs. Various manuscripts contain quotations or relatively long allegories, which might be repeated in other manuscripts, though not verbatim. The challenge I have is that such manuscripts have little punctuation which makes segmentation hard. If I try to force my own interpretation of segment length, I will have either big chunks of text, or small segments that risk nullifying the benefits of translation memory if segmentation was done differently for similar texts. In addition to this, subject specific glossaries are rare and I have to consult several sources and thesauri to find equivalents, and as such I wish to compile my own glossary to ensure quality and consistency.

I do not know whether there is a problem, hence the question.
Regexes, at least by default, are processed from left-to-right, whereas some languages, such as Arabic, are written RTL.

Left-to-right or right-to-left is a matter of rendering the text whereas the text itself is an ordered sequence of unicode characters. In that abstraction, there is no distinction between left-to-right and right-to-left languages.

Am I missing something?

I am currently writing a book on the practical use of regexes in the translation environment and would like to include a short comment concerning considerations of using regexes with RTL languages (such as Arabic or Hebrew). In particular, regexes normally scan left to right and numbers are written left to right, how is this conflict handled for RTL languages? I would appreciate feedback from any translator who works with this problem.

Hello,

If anyone can help I would be very grateful! I admit I am a beginner at Wordfast Anywhere. Whenever I try to put tags in, the order gets all mixed up when translating from English to Arabic and the opposite. Sometimes the tags get grouped all at one end, even though I put them in in alternating spots. I can't figure out what I should do! It may be related to the different direction of writing (left to right and the opposite)?

Dear Colleagues,

I am translating a text from English to Arabic on a Word document. The layout of the original text is 2 columns on a page. I have tried 2 different ways, but failed: 1- I tried to change the columns on the original English text so the right column becomes left and the left becomes right. 2- Translate the text into Arabic on a separate document then change the layout into 2 columns; however, the text still reads from left column to right.

I would rather change the English columns order (swap the columns) is this possible? If not possible, how can I have the Arabic columns read in the right order (from right to left).

Try OCRing the file with ABBYY FineReader. I had once a document with a mix of English and Arabic (I had to translate the English part). After OCRing, both looked fine to me, but I can’t comment on the quality of recognition of Arabic as I’m not really proficient in it and only can judge by appearance of the letters.

When converting an Arabic pdf to a Word document using Adoble Document cloud the Arabic text becomes disjointed.

Any advice on how to resolve this or better ways for converting an Arabic pdf to an Arabic Word document, would be much appreciated.

Check the "keep options" in the applied paragraph style.

Or it could be a giant "spacing before".

Or it could be that some keyboard key is stuck and you're inserting a frame break character... or check the keyboard shortcuts of the "insert break character" menu items.

Haven't worked in right-to-left, but check that the text has a right-to-left language applied. (It's in the paragraph settings.)

Hi Everyone,

1) When I press enter in text frame in any page, the text from the place goes to next page leaving the whole space after the mark blank.

2) In the table of contents, tabs work from left to right, not right to left (as required in Urdu), causing a great problem in aligning the listing of page numbers.

What is the solution to these problems?

Dear colleagues,

I would like to switch the font orientation from right to left to left to right for a few words in an Arabic translation to insert a "Mailto:" link into that translation the European way as the actual customer will not understand the reverse display of the e-mail address mentioned in European(!) characters.

I have Word 2010 but I am unable to find the two buttons mentioned in that blogpost in Word 2010 German.

It is a bit of an emergency as the customer will most probably not accept the translation this way.

Any IT wizard out there who speaks some German?

It is word (.doc) file not processed by Trados. The file contains 2 languages and I want the count of characters, preferably, of one of these languages. There is no target file, it is just for counting the amount of text in one of languages.

Hi,

Before discussing any possible solutions, are we talking about a bilingual Word file processed using Trados or a file containing text in multiple languages? If it's the former, do you want to count the source or the target words?

Also, are you sure this is posted under the correct category?
