As with anything on the GNU/Linux world, a bit of trial and error solved the problem. I'll just mention the solutions here, in case someone runs into the issues I mentioned above.

By default, OmegaT 6.0.1 uses Java 11, because that's what they include in the installer. By removing the folder "jre" in /opt/omegat, I forced it to use the system-wide Java 21. Now, all menus open correctly and I am able to resize window panes.

As for the problem with shortcuts like Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C not working when my keyboard is set to Greek (which is the case when I type into a target segment), I solved it by going to System Settings > Keyboard and moving the English US layout to the top. Weird little bug, but this simple change did the trick. Now, all shortcuts work properly.

Because I would need to do the process nine times in order to compile all three applications I need on all three operating systems I use. I have no interest in downloading, installing and configuring ant and npm on three different platforms.

I have not tried Swordfish on Kubuntu yet. But when I tried it on Mint, I am not sure it ran very smoothly. And the lack of a context menu was a disappointment, to be honest, as was the fact that all segments besides the very first one begin with a space. In any case, I am not willing to install ant and npm and all those tools just to compile Swordfish.

Besides, the subscription is quite expensive for me, given that I would need to buy three tools to do what other tools do out of the box. If you decided to offer Swordfish with an aligner and a TM editor in a single, integrated package at an affordable price, preferably with a perpetual license, I might try again.

Linux is fine for translation and other jobs, but the distribution you select affects how you work.

I build and test my translaton software on Ubuntu 24.04 with a GNOME environment. It works great.

Linux was my main Operating System for years and "Enlightement 17" was my preferred environment. Today that combination is unusable.

Try standard Ubuntu with GNOME, your tools will probably work as expected on it.

I installed Kubuntu 25.10. Here are a couple of problems:

OmegaT and CafeTran do not run well. The installed Java version is JDK 21.0.9. When these apps are in a maximised window and I try to click on a menu heading, the menu opens momentarily and disappears immediately. In CafeTran I can't even resize the different sections in a maximised window. Also, in both tools, when I press Ctrl+A to select the text in the translated segment, the shortcut works as expected when my keyboard layout it set to English US but does nothing when it is set to Greek. Finally, in CafeTran, when I click on "What's new", it complains that this function is not supported on my platform.

SubtitleEdit supposedly runs on Linux. I followed the steps and ran it. GUI elements appear in a blurry DejaVu font. Apostrophes in subtitles appear as question marks, and when I try to type in my translation in Greek, no matter what key I press, I end up with an accented omega: ώ. When I tried out subtitling applications made for Linux, I found they either don't have a Greek spelling dictionary and/or that they have none of the timing constraints and checks we need for professional work. And, of course, they mostly work only with SRT or ASS formats, when I mostly need EBU STL.

So, yeah. Linux for translators? Not quite there yet, even with supposedly multi-platform applications, which turn out to be Windows-first applications.

Browser-based tools to the rescue? Perhaps. Cattitude (for translation) and Ooona Tools (for subtitling) seem to be browser-based tools that work with your local files, without requiring you to upload them to a remote server.

Update: Cattitude requires uploading files to a remote server. Tutorial videos use the development machine, that's why files load so fast from the local file system.

I agree, but I think it's a good idea to have yet another option. Although not particularly complicated, running a VM directly doesn't really integrate with the system and running a VM in its own xsession requires a logout and quite the configuration prior to use, so depending on how much a given software is used one might prefer one over the other. WinApps is probably the most annoying to configure, but it does have a few advantages that might make it attractive to users.

I will have other uses for it aside from strictly translation/editing matters (like comparing software and translations and suggesting improvements) and resource usage isn't a problem, so for me the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

I'm referring to operations like importing files (or re-importing after changing segmentation rules or the file filter), TM lookups, terminology lookups, TM import/export, exporting translated files, performing statistics / match analysis. Everything is fast, responsive, and without using weird file formats—only plain text and other standard, open formats that can be edited easily on all platforms.

That sounds interesting. At what specific operations are you referring here? It would be interesting to do some benchmarking.

You can merge segments if you install a ready-made script they have. The problem with OmegaT is the initial setup, which entails manual work and searching for solutions to numerous little annoyances. Once you have found those solutions and made all the necessary settings, it works like a charm, and much faster than any other CAT tool, on all three platforms.

You could have a look at Cattitude, which is a browser-based but local (if I'm not terribly mistaken) tool. It seems to run on localhost, so there is no roundtrip to the Internet.

Other CAT tools that run under Linux are OmegaT, Virtaal, Cafetran, Poedit.

It's not nearly finished yet, but my new AI-powered translation tool (Supervertaler) runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. Basically, on anything that can run Python.

I thought of OmegaT, too, which I know how to use (I currently work on a Mac with Windows installed as VM unter Parallels). But unfortuntaly it lacks some important basic features (merging segments, for instance). Could it be that there is a Wordfast version that runs on the Linux platform? I will look into that.

Which is an free software you can use not only with Linux but also Windows and Mac.
I don't use it very often because my clients use standard CAT tools running either on Windows or online but some friend of mine work with OmegaT on a usual basis and seems satisfied with it.
You can give it a try by downloading the version you need from their website

For a while I couldn’t open package files unless they had a pretranslation in the target column, forcing my PM to copy source to target before handing me files. That was fixed a few versions later. The other day I was asked to insert comments on segments that already had comments; it worked once after much fidgeting and then I couldn’t edit the comments on any of the other segments. Sometimes I’ve returned packages and been told they were empty although I could see the translation on my end (user error in some cases; one would expect to return the same package file rather than having to look for individual XLIFFs in a subfolder).

I haven’t heard of (or looked for) a distribution made specifically for translators, but I do recommend everyone ditch Windows.

Some agencies have memoQWeb instances, so you don’t need the local client at all (though not all features exist in the Web client). CafeTran can handle Trados files, but it’s kind of hit or miss. I’m not really a fan of it, but it gets the job done most of the time and I do love that it has predictive typing. I tend to just avoid Trados jobs altogether; sometimes project managers are willing to accommodate other formats (at least when they request your services rather than the other way around).

The majority of my clients use Phrase, Crowdin, memoQWeb, XTM or their own translation platforms in the browser, so I get sufficient work without bothering with this, but it certainly doesn’t make things easier when starting out as a freelancer (or losing your clients to LLMs). There’s always virtual machines and/or dual booting if you are willing to make the compromise.

Absolutely, and absolutely not. The reasons that made me switch from Windows only keep getting worse with every new edition. Linux is by no means perfect and infallible, but it respects the user and gets out of the way. Once you find your favourite distro and set it up just the way you like, it’s smooth sailing until a maintainer decides to get rid of a feature you were relying on :P

I have no idea how much disk space Win10 needs, but the rest depends on the distro and what you do with it. I run Mint on a 256-GB SSD, with an additional 1-TB hard drive containing most of my /home directory (with copious amounts of music, photos, videos and games). If you’re not putting games and movies on it, I reckon 500 GB is probably plenty.

Dual booting is kind of a miserable experience, though, if you’re not used to it. Plenty of people have had issues with Windows updates breaking their bootloader and making their Linux system inaccessible without complicated repairs in the BIOS. It’s not insurmountable if you have the patience and the will to find and follow instructions, but it’s not the kind of thing you want to happen to your daily workstation out of nowhere.

I am considering to make the switch from using Windows to an OS built specifically for translators. Can anyone recommend doing this out of own experience?

How do you deal with the fact that for so many available jobs the requirements are very often either MemoQ or SDL Trados Studio? Can you handle most MemoQ and SDL Trados Studio files also in a Linux CAT tool?

Are you satisfied with your switch to Linux? Would you ever consider going back to Windows again for any reason?

I have a laptop now with two SSD NVMe M.2 drives - C: on 500 GB and D: on 1 TB. I could insert a third HDD (not SSD) in the third slot also. My RAM is on 32 GB. Will my C: drive on 500 GB only be sufficient to hold both Windows 10 Pro and a Linux distro?
