The lifestyle of a translator is a sedentary one. This is inherently unhealthy and requires all kinds of compensatory provisions and activities in order to stay healthy.

I’ve been a pescatarian for a few years now, meaning that I follow an adapted Mediterranean diet with no red meat at all. My only “sins” are dark chocolate and espresso coffee (there isn’t a general consensus on these two being healthy or not). I walk about one hour every day: circa 30 minutes early morning and the same late afternoon thanks to my dog...

Although I'm probably living a healthier life now than I was 10 years ago or prior to that; I drink a lot less alcohol nowadays and regularly walk the dog, which is more exercise than I used to get. However, I'm about 10 kg overweight and should really try to get that down, once I've finished all the buns and sweet things in my kitchen cupboards...

I don't smoke and almost don't drink alcohol. I try to eat only healthy food, I go to gym 5 or 6 times a week and I walk every day almost for one hour. I think that sports its very important for us because we work at the PC. It's good for body and mind. I also try not to use my PC or my Smarphone in my freetime. That's good for my eyes. Sleeping enough is very important too for me.

Yes, you should. Here's a picture of 10x 1 kg bags of rice.

That’s a little insensitive, Tom!

I normally try to offset my sedentary lifestyle with intense bouts of womanising, but the lockdown means I only have myself to play with.

Healthy enough for me Nov 2, 2020

A lot of gurus would say no, because I get far too little exercise. That is their opinion, but I am fine with it. I personally have never felt any great benefits from exercise for its own sake.

I go for a brisk weekly walk with a walking club, because I like the company, and love the sea and the woods and the hills, but after a couple of hours I need a bath and usually end up having to take medication for migraine... Likewise any other kind of energetic exercise I have tried, so I k

I go for a brisk weekly walk with a walking club, because I like the company, and love the sea and the woods and the hills, but after a couple of hours I need a bath and usually end up having to take medication for migraine... Likewise any other kind of energetic exercise I have tried, so I keep it to a minimum.

On the other hand I am rarely ill and never have back trouble. At a gentle pace I can walk or stand for several hours a day without problems. I have passed the proverbial three score years and ten, so my lifestyle is healthy enough for me.

I don't drink alcohol, but I do drink coffee... I love fruit and vegetables, but I have a sweet tooth and a great collection of cake and dessert recipes. Losing a few kilos might be a good idea, but I would have to try extremely hard.

My only problem is that I dislocated my shoulder in the spring, and it will probably never recover 100%. (I was walking too fast, so I did not see a bramble across the path, and fell over it. I knew exercise should never be overdone ) But hey, I can drive the car again, carry the shopping home, and lift my grandchild (10-11 kg), so I have a lot to be thankful for.

I am not a guru of bad habits. I don't smoke and don't drink alcohol, but I am bad eating and I should do physical exercises. My lifestyle is healthy except for little "bad" habit.

You have to be cruel to be kind. It's what I did when I realised that I needed to lose a lot of kilos. I went into the kitchen and took a 1 kg bag of rice, and said to myself OMG that is what I'm carrying around. (x several) No wonder I feel tired all the time! And how I'm straining my heart ! BTW I still have to lose several more of those bags, which at my current gentle rate of weight loss will - I estimate - take me until March 2021. I will then be at the top end of my ideal BMI so after that I should still lose more Kg.

Tom, I don't know what choc bar you eat every Sunday, but if it isn't an Aero, maybe it's not too late to make the switch. Think of all the non-calories you could be notching up simply because of the air in there that isn't chocolate. Although I don't know if you can still get Aero bars in the UK? I asked someone about this not so long ago, but never got any reply. I think the minty ones would have a marked fresh-breath advantage.

It's OK, Tom, don't waste another second of your time on it. Rachel Fell's already cleared it up. But I still think an Aero on Sundays would help you lighten up, and maybe in more ways than one.

Because if I lived a healthy lifestyle, I'd live far too long in good health.
I've weighed about the same weight all my adult life in the flyweight category without tapeworm.
I am never out of order, save a collapsed lung, a few contagious diseases, a handful of broken bones and countless hangovers.
I ingest all sorts of food and liquids without the slightest sense of guilt, but I almost quit smoking when I realised it stinks.

My last half-marathon was in 2013, then I decided sport was for the youth.

Weed always thrives and never dies.

However, there is this soft layer gradually spreading over my abdominal area while progressing into my fifties, and I'm thinking of doing something about it. Not for health reasons, but because I can't do anything about gravity.

My habits are healthy enough and I don't really have any "bad" ones (except reading daily news and similar, but I have cut down on those too), which means I also don't get too obsessed with a healthy lifestyle. I don't need extra stress and I truly believe that occasional "guilty pleasures" do less harm than constant worrying about how bad they are.
