Cymbidiums are usually epiphytic in nature, and even the terrestrial species have similar requirements to the epiphytes. Although they grow best in moisture-retaining rotting wood, leaf litter or other accumulated plant debris, they dry out rapidly and their roots are never wet for long. The potting mix should be open enough to allow free drainage, but should also be able to absorb and hold moisture. The openness of the compost will to some extent depend upon the frequency with which the grower can water his plants. More frequent watering will allow a more open mix to be used. This has the advantage of allowing enough air to reach the roots, as in the wild epiphytic plants, and also allows easier control of soil moisture in the winter, when excess water can easily cause the roots to rot.
Ideally, a compost should maintain its openness for several years, so that repotting is only necessary once every three years or so. Large chips of pine bark form the basis of many potting mixtures, serving to keep the compost open. Perlite, and sometimes coarse peat, are also added to hold moisture, especially important for amateur growers who cannot ensure regular watering. Coarsely crushed charcoal helps to keep the compost fresh, by absorbing detrimental chemicals, such as salts from excess fertiliser or water and plant decomposition products. Small amounts of dolomitic limestone are sometimes added as well, to balance the acidity caused by phenolic acids released as the pine bark breaks down.
A general compost which could be varied to meet the growers' personal requirements would include approximately 3 parts of coarse bark flakes, 1 part of coarse peat, 1 part of perlag and 1 part of coarse charcoal chips.

En su hábitat natural las Cymbidium suelen ser epífitas, e incluso las especies terrestres requieren cuidados similares a las epífitas. Crecen mejor en madera en descomposición, hojarasca u otros desechos vegetales —puesto que retienen mejor la humedad—, pero se secan rápidamente y sus raíces nunca están húmedas durante mucho tiempo. El sustrato debe ser aireado para que filtre bien el agua de riego, pero también tiene que ser capaz de absorber y retener la humedad. Elegir un sustrato más o menos aireado dependerá de la frecuencia con que el cuidador pueda regar las plantas: cuanto más frecuente sea el riego, más aireada debe ser la mezcla que utilice. La ventaja de este método es que permite aportar suficiente aire a las raíces, como ocurre en las plantas epífitas que crecen al natural, y también permite controlar mejor la humedad del sustrato en invierno, época en que un exceso de agua enseguida pudriría las raíces.
Lo ideal sería que un sustrato se mantuviera aireado durante varios años para que solo fuera necesario trasplantar las orquídeas cada tres años aproximadamente. La base de muchos sustratos se compone de trozos grandes de corteza de pino, que sirven para mantener el sustrato aireado. También se suele añadir perlita y en ocasiones turba gruesa para retener la humedad, factor muy importante para aquellos cultivadores aficionados que no pueden garantizar un riego regular. El carbón vegetal en trozos grandes también ayuda a mantener el sustrato en óptimas condiciones, pues absorbe sustancias químicas perjudiciales, como las sales que se derivan de un exceso de fertilizante o elementos naturales resultantes de la descomposición del agua y de las plantas. Puede ser útil añadir piedra caliza dolomítica en pequeñas cantidades para contrarrestar la acidez causada por el ácido fenólico que libera la corteza de pino al descomponerse.
Un sustrato general que se puede ir variando para satisfacer las necesidades concretas de cada cultivador incluiría tres partes de corteza de árbol en trozos grandes, una parte de turba de grado grueso, una parte de perlag y una parte de trozos de carbón vegetal grandes.

A qualified English and French into Spanish translator, I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Translation Studies awarded by the University Jaume I (Castellón, Spain, 1995-1999). I have been working in the translation field for 20 years now, first in an in-house position as project manager and proofreader in a book translations company, and since 2009 as self-employed, when I started translating for a leading agricultural machinery manufacturer. I have experience translating brochures, technical specs, press releases and website texts about ploughs, cultivators, seed drills, fertilizer spreaders, cutters and shredders, and more.
I also work in the publishing field, where I offer translation and proofreading services, as well as final quality control of DTPed texts. I mainly work with travel guides, cookery books, handcrafts and children's literature. I am therefore specialized in processing texts before they are published to ensure that they are accurate, make sense and read well.
I am happy to provide both translation and proofreading services, as well as final pre-delivery check of texts in Spanish. Additionally, I work with InDesign (CS6 and 2020 versions) for Mac, so I can deliver your documents typeset if needed.
