I applied for a job on another forum.

A short time later I received that job - a large pdf file with finance text.

The agency has no address, the phone numer is ++98, the fax no. is ++91, no website etc.

I refused the job as it seemed to be suspicious to me and wrote them, that I am not good in finance and can thus not provide a good quality.

What do you think about it? I really have a bad feeling...

Trust your gut feeling Feb 21, 2008

Check them out on the blue board and any other tools you have available, by all means, but I'd go with your gut instinct. If you don't like the sound of it, leave well alone.

Thanks Feb 21, 2008

I think, my feeling is correct - which agency wouldn't accept a "no" if the translator says, he/she is not good enough for this special subject?

Put them in the junk-folder Feb 21, 2008

So you do not have to worry about their correspondence in the future.
Cheers

Junk to junk? ;-) Feb 21, 2008

That is a pretty good idea, Heinrich.
They send one email after the other.
I now requested advance payment and I think, that will be the end of this stuff

Enough reasons to turn them down Feb 21, 2008

Hi Capesha,

The agency has no address

quality is not the problem (?)

Two reasons which are enough to turn this down.
Quality will be a problem once you've sent your invoice.

Best regards,
Ralf

Ask for their contact details Feb 21, 2008

I agree with Marie-Hélène, trust your feelings. However, to confirm those feelings, why not ask them for their full contact details - address, telephone number, website, etc.? If they won't supply them, they are definitely suspicious.
Best wishes,
Jenny.

Well, if they are in a rush... Feb 21, 2008

kindly advise them to send along a rushy advance payment and you might even consider working for them.

... oh I see you already did that. Good move!

+91 is code for India Feb 21, 2008

+91 is the code for India (that's my country) but +98 is for Iran...

So, yes, I guess your gut feeling is correct. Does indeed appear to be a shady agency.

Thank you all... Feb 21, 2008

...for your helpful entries.
It really seems as it had been a good decision not to agree to this job.
I just wanted to share my thoughts in order to see, if I am maybe too careful.

Similar situation with me Feb 21, 2008

I'm also receiving such emails. Usually it is a direct message via proz.com
and never a formal ad posting on the site.

The idea is you want to make sure that you get paid, and if not, that
you can legally force payment.

Pre-payment is suspicious cases is always a good idea. I usually ask for 33%.
That really separates the sheep from the wolves

I do not think the fact that their agency has Indian and/or Iranian code makes them shady. It might be anywhere. But by all means do not trust them if they are rushing you and things. Just bear in mind that one agency does not represent a country.

I think the point was that a phone number in one country and a fax number in another... Feb 22, 2008

... is suspicious in itself, regardless of what countries they may actually be. I certainly didn't infer any insult to the countries concerned, and as Anindita is herself Indian, I doubt very much she intended any!

No prejudices Feb 22, 2008

@Ramin: we, as translators, have to think global. The hint of the Indian phone number and the fax number from Irak came from an Indian translator

I know some very nice agencies from these countries, but also some, I would not like to work for. But this also applies to some European countries

I also get that Anindita is Indian herself. I have had my share of shady agencies too and hold no prejudice against any country.

By the way, since you are trying to think global I think the correct country name would be Iran rather than Irak.

apologies if I was snappy before.

Cheers
