One of the ideas for the future announced during the Kraków conference was to have local, i.e. regional, conferences as well as international events.

One of the ideas for the future announced during the Kraków conference was to have local, i.e. regional, conferences as well as international events.

This inspired us to make plans for a regional conference in Edinburgh on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th November 2006. Initially, we hope to run the conference over one and a half days to allow time for socialising, sightseeing etc.

When we ran this idea past some of the UK-based conference participants in Kraków, their response was very positive. But this conference is not only aimed at Prozians in the UK. Anybody who would like to combine a conference for translators and interpreters with a trip to the capital of Scotland is most welcome.

So far, everything is at a very early planning stage, and we now need to find out if there is sufficient interest to go ahead. We hope to be able to exchange information on the programme, participants etc. in a separate area of this site in the near future.

First things first: We'd like to introduce ourselves, the "organisers":

We've decided on Edinburgh because, like Kraków, it's a beautiful city and easily accessible from all over the UK and beyond. Pernille and Rebekka are based here, which should make it a bit easier finding suitable venues etc.

We've given some thought to potential session topics and are hoping to exchange ideas with the organisers of the first German regional conference, which takes place in Berlin at the end of May 2006.

Potential sessions/discussion groups:

• How to keep your skills up-to-date (workshop/discussion group)
• How to specialise or how to add a new specialisation to your existing skill base (workshop/discussion group)
• How to keep your native language alive and up to date when living abroad (discussion group)
• Presentation/workshop on tax issues, run by a representative from the Inland Revenue
• Presentation on web design principles
• Presentation/workshop on self-marketing for interpreters/translators (idea borrowed from the German crowd)

Other activities:

Networking dinner on Friday night, possibly followed by Scottish Country Dancing and live music.
