I'm looking for a decent accountant specialising in small businesses/sole traders, preferably South Manchester but anywhere in Manchester is fine. I'm told word of mouth is better than a Google search, so was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on who's good and who to avoid!

The one accountancy firm I've approached recommended I become a ltd company to save on national insurance, but I'm not sure I want to go through all that to save a bit of money, so I'm after some more spec

The one accountancy firm I've approached recommended I become a ltd company to save on national insurance, but I'm not sure I want to go through all that to save a bit of money, so I'm after some more specialist advice and my tax returns doing. Shouldn't be too complicated, I think.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Did you find someone? Jun 3, 2013

Hi Jen, I was just wondering whether or not you had found an accountant in South Manchester? I'll be moving my business from Italy to the Stockport area soon so will be looking for an accountant. Thanks!

I actually went with my dad's firm after visiting two local accountants who both gave me the same advice without really listening to my needs. They both wanted me to go the limited company route, meaning a whole bunch of extra paperwork, headaches and legal implications - this latter was what clinched it for me. If an accountant doesn't tell you that your government pension will be severely affected by you not paying NI, I don't want them to deal with my financial affairs. What else are they not... See more
I actually went with my dad's firm after visiting two local accountants who both gave me the same advice without really listening to my needs. What else are they not telling me? I want a specialist to explain all the options to me without editing so I can make up my own mind - not push me into taking the option that would earn them more. I can understand why they'd do this, but I don't like it and don't have to support it with my money.

I remain a sole trader, and will until my earnings are quite significantly above the 40% tax threshold, should that ever happen! www.mooreandsmalley.co.uk are who I'm currently with. In this digital age, you don't really need to have physical contact with them so locality wasn't a massive issue for me in the end. They've answered all my questions, kept up good communication, and, barring some minor admin issues, have done what I've asked for without a fuss and in good time. Chartered accountants, too, which gives me personally additional peace of mind.

Hope that helps!

Jen
