Advice: technical dictionary English - German Thread poster: Anne Zielisch MCIL

Hello,
it´s probably been discussed before, but things change so quickly that I would like an up-to-date answer, suggestion, ideas etc.
1) I am thinking of upgrading my technical dictionary (hardcopy); do you still use paper dictionaries at all, or are they out of date?
2) If you use one, which one would you recommend?
Many thanks in advance!

I don't think a bilingual paper dictionary will ever be outdated.
In ENFR, some large companies and organisations publish their own specialty dictionary (oil, nuclear, grain, food processing,...), without digital alternative, perhaps to avoid widespread dissemination such as hacked copies.
I am sure some German companies have developed their own commercial ENDE dictionary in precision mechanics, chemicals or water treatment...
They usually cost an arm (EUR100+), but they are very much worth the money for technical translations. Even though everything may exist on the web, it is sometimes impossible to find it.

There are many occasions when using a CD-ROM version is impractical - your computer has no optical drive, e.g., or on a certification exam where electronic resources are not allowed. A paper copy saves wear-and-tear on your optical drive as well, though I understand that some dictionaries come in the form of a USB dongle now. Still, I'm wary of expensive electronic dictionaries, having more than once seen them rendered completely inoperable/unreinstallable by OS updates or upgrades on the computer.
Searchable pdf's (as opposed to restrictive software configurations) work great though...
2. Ernst. However, I use only the German>English volume. ▲ Collapse | |

If they do not help, I use Google, but there you must be careful (as with the dictionaries), depending on the context.
